Recently, Amotech Africa in collaboration with Megger organized an in-depth technical training session in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, covering essential diagnostic and testing equipment used for power system maintenance and reliability. This hands-on training was designed to empower technicians and engineers with practical skills for accurate and reliable equipment testing, ensuring power system safety and efficiency. 👉 The training was run on different types of Megger equipment including: ✔️ Megger STX40-2000: Cable Fault locator up to 40kV  ✔️ Freja 546: Relay protection testing ✔️ Egile 200: Circuit breaker testing  ✔️ INGVAR: Primary injection up to 5kA ✔️ MVCT: CT and VT testing ✔️ Insulation resistance test with MIT525 📌 This training was essential and it equipped the SNEL engineers with the necessary skills to perform critical tests on electrical assets, helping improve system reliability, safety, and efficiency in electrical networks. Key skills covered included: fault detection, ensuring protective device functionality, and maintaining regulatory compliance. This in turn minimizes downtime, reduces maintenance costs, and prevents equipment failure, ultimately supporting safe and cost-effective operations. Last month, Amotech Africa, in collaboration with Strathmore Energy Research Centre, successfully conducted a comprehensive training session for the site engineers at the 52MWp Malindi Solar Power Plant. This training was essential for enhancing their expertise in photovoltaic systems, operation, and maintenance. 👉 Key Highlights of the Training: • Photovoltaic Systems: In-depth understanding of solar technology and maintenance practices. • Power System Protection: Focused on critical areas including:  - Generating plants  - Substations  - Transmission networks  - Remedial Action Schemes Malindi Solar Technical team gained insights into common system faults such as overcurrent, over/under voltage and frequency issues, along with preventive and breakdown maintenance strategies. Fundamentals of protection relays was also introduced to further enhance understanding on substation fault detection. Discussion on the following essential substation equipment was done: ◾ Current Transformers (CTs) ◾ Capacitive Coupling Current Transformers (CCVTs) ◾ Voltage Transformers (VTs) ◾ Power Transformers (PTs) The training also included hands-on experience with protection devices and testing of Substation Primary equipment using advanced equipment like the Megger TRAX 279 Transformer and Substation test set, Megger FRAX 101 and Seaward Utility Pro. This initiative not only strengthens the technical capabilities of our engineers but also contributes to the safe and efficient operation of solar energy systems and substation facilities.
