Global warming is not just a climate crisis but a LIFE CRISIS Communities see it from - Worsening health risks - Water scarcity - Food scarcity - Loss of livelihoods They don’t count metric tonnes of carbon, they count lives of humans, livestock and livelihoods In Africa, the per person carbon emission per year is less that 1 Metric Tonne of Carbon equivalent while in Rich countries, it’s more that 14 metric tonnes! This means an Average African will take 14 years to emit as much as an average American emits in one year!!! 14 years!! No percentage of reduction from 1 Metric Tonne of Carbon will match the changes needed to reduce carbon emissions of High Income countries! African governments need to focus where it matters - Adaptation of communities to be resilient enough in the face of the global warming through climate resilient health systems, water systems, sanitation systems, agriculture, including social protection - WHILE pressuring high income countries to stop polluting or PAY!! Setting up Carbon emission reduction plans and committees and strategies before Adaptation and Resilience in countries with less than 1 Metric tonne of emissions is to buy into someone else’s agenda rather than your own! At the ongoing AfricaHealth and MedlabAfrica 2024 conference in Cape Town, Lolem B. Ngong, Chief of Staff & Group Programmes Director at Amref Health Africa, posed some thought-provoking questions that should challenge how we approach partnerships for #development: 🔍 What if we removed money from the equation? 💭 How does money shape our priorities and influence what we do? 🤔 Are we spending time and resources doing the right things for the right people at the right time? Africa represents 17% of the #global population but only accounts for 2% of global GDP. Our fiscal space isn’t expanding rapidly enough to meet the continent's growing needs. But with the right partnerships, we can drive #sustainable #growth and #impact. Here are some key takeaways from the session: 1️⃣ 'De-projectise' health partnerships and align them with national health strategies and plans. 2️⃣ Governments must take leadership to ensure long-term sustainability of health interventions. 3️⃣ We need to strengthen entire health systems—every role matters, from #community health workers to specialist clinicians. 4️⃣ Health is everybody’s business—collaboration is key to success. 5️⃣ A clear partnership framework is crucial for #equitable, sustainable, and dignified relationships. 6️⃣ Building and maintaining partnerships takes time, trust, open communication, and mutual #respect. Global health is often viewed as a platform where decisions about Africa are made by 'others' without our direct involvement. It should be about Africans taking ownership of our own health, and collaborating with like-minded partners to achieve our shared goals. 💡 At Amref, we believe in #partnerships that drive lasting #change, not solely through #financial #investments, but by fostering collaboration, mutual understanding, and shared goals that prioritise the needs of African communities. Together, we can build a healthier and more sustainable future for the continent. Medlab Group World Health Organization Université de Technologie de Compiègne (UTC) C. At the ongoing 10th edition of the Future of Health Conference, hosted by Nigeria Health Watch in Abuja, Amref's Group Director for Partnerships and External Affairs, Desta Lakew, today delivered a powerful message on the transformative role we are playing in addressing #climatechange as a core social determinant of health. She emphasised our commitment to bold, integrated, actionable solutions, and here’s how we’re making a difference: 💡 Implementing One Health programmes that integrate human, animal, and environmental health 👩⚕️ Building a climate-ready health workforce by rolling out WHO’s Climate Change and Health First Responders’ course to both pre-and in-service healthcare workers ⏳ Strengthening early warning systems at the community and national levels to mitigate climate-related health risks 📊 Prioritising evidence generation through key partnerships like our work with the World Resources Institute to map energy and electricity access in primary healthcare facilities across Africa. But that’s not all. #Amref is leading the charge on #global advocacy and collaboration, ensuring #health takes its rightful place in global #climate discussions. Health is currently not recognised as a formal working group within the UNFCCC. Can you imagine that? We are changing this narrative. Our leadership includes: ✅ Hosting ministerial events on climate and health at COP28, 77th World Health Assembly, 2024 World Health Summit, and more ✅ Developing the Pan-African common position on climate change and health ✅ Serving on the COP28 UAE Steering Committee, advocating for African health priorities ✅ Leveraging the Africa Health Agenda International Conference (AHAIC) to drive #ClimateAction on health in #Africa. ✅ Most importantly, we have officially formed the Pan-African Partnership on Climate Change and Health alongside World Health Organization and key partners. This partnership, launching at COP29 Azerbaijan, will ensure that health is recognised as a priority within the UNFCCC work programme. 🗣 Join us in this critical journey. We must speak with one voice to ensure our African communities are protected from the increasing climate-linked health threats. Together, we can secure a healthier future for Africa and the world. Let’s unite to amplify the Pan-African voice on climate and health. #ClimateHealthNexusNG #FHC2024 #ClimateHealth
