⚡ The Future of EVs in Kenya: Why Local Assembly is Key to Sustainable Growth 🌍 As Kenya navigates the transition to electric mobility, the policy discussion on zero import duty for completely built-up (CBU) electric vehicles (EVs) is gaining momentum, with multinational importers lobbying that this will allow the rapid growth of EVs in the market. While this might offer short-term affordability, the long-term implications for our economy and local industries could be detrimental. Instead, we should focus on pushing for locally assembled EVs at the CKD (Completely Knocked Down) level, which brings significant benefits to the economy. 🚫 The Risks of Zero Duty on CBU EVs: 1 - Inhibits Local Manufacturing Zero duty on CBUs discourages local assembly which virtually destroys any opportunity for local part manufacturing, preventing the growth of homegrown industries. 2 - Loss of Skills & Expertise Relying on imported CBUs limits opportunities for Kenyans to gain valuable skills in vehicle & part manufacturing and assembly. 3 - Economic Dependence on Imports Allowing the importation of CBUs increases our reliance on global supply chains and exposes the economy to risks such as currency fluctuations and import price volatility. In the long run, this makes EVs less affordable and places pressure on foreign exchange reserves. ✅ Opportunities with CKD Assembly: 1 - Boost to Local Manufacturing CKD assembly opens doors for Kenyan manufacturers to produce vehicle parts and components, creating a robust supply chain and supporting ancillary businesses in sectors like steel, plastics, and electronics. 2 - Job Creation & Economic Growth The local assembly of EVs at CKD level creates direct and indirect job opportunities, from skilled labor in factories to support services like logistics, marketing, and distribution. This ensures that Kenya reaps the rewards of its investment in the EV sector. 3 - Technology Transfer & Innovation With CKD assembly, international manufacturers can partner with local firms, providing training, technology transfer, and innovation. This builds capacity and fosters research and development in areas like battery technology, vehicle design, and production processes. 4 - Improved Quality Control & Local Adaptation Locally assembled EVs allow for better control over quality standards and the ability to tailor vehicles for Kenyan road conditions, climate, and infrastructure needs. This ensures that EVs are not only affordable but also safe and efficient for local use. 🌍 A Sustainable Future for Kenya's EV Industry By adopting CKD assembly, Kenya can build a sustainable EV ecosystem and create a self-reliant industry that positions Kenya as a leader in the global electric mobility space. What are your thoughts on this? Let’s discuss in the comments. #ElectricMobility #KenyaEVs #SustainableGrowth #EVPolicy #LocalAssembly #LocalManufacturing #EconomicOpportunities
