The transport sector in Rwanda accounts for 13 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions with 40 per cent of transport emissions coming from buses.  Electrification of public transport plays a key part in reducing emissions and in Rwanda, the Government has set a target of having 20 per cent of all buses to be electric buses (e-buses) by 2030.  Therefore, we are now extending our support with $7.5 million to enable BasiGo to buy 100 more e-buses to scale up its operations in Rwanda. This will avoid around 70 tCO2 emissions annually.  BasiGo is an innovative e-mobility company and our existing investee. It provides e-buses which are leased on an innovative “pay-as-you-drive” basis in Africa. This model makes e-buses more affordable as it enables operators to lease buses and cover charging and servicing at a cheaper cost than the diesel alternative.  Lord Ray Collins, of Highbury, UK Minister for Africa, recently took a ride on a BasiGo bus during his trip in Rwanda for a first-hand green transportation experience.  He said: “BasiGo’s e-bus network in Kigali is a real testament to the future of green transport. It is crucial that the UK supports sustainable initiatives like this. Through BII, we are supporting innovative businesses that provide solutions to reduce emissions and contribute to a more sustainable future for all. When I was in Rwanda, I stressed the new UK Government’s commitment to economic partnership.” Seema Dhanani, CFA, Head of Office, Kenya and Coverage Director, East Africa at BII, said: “We are delighted to support BasiGo as it expands into Rwanda. This marks a significant step in electrifying the local public transport sector, reducing pollution, and combating climate change impacts. This is in line with our priority of supporting e-mobility to foster sustainable economic growth.”  Together, we are driving towards a greener, more sustainable future for Rwanda. #GofarGoTogether  Emma Hawkins; Susan Tissiman; Cindy Low; Dimitri Da Gama Rose; Tatwin Owen Edmunds; Chukwudi Iwuozor (Jnr) ~ ESG Tuareg; Amelie Fabian; Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office

Exciting news from BasiGo Rwanda! Yesterday, Oct-8th, we marked a significant milestone in our journey toward sustainable transport with the introduction of Electric Buses designed for operations beyond Kigali – a groundbreaking first for Rwanda!  We have rigorously tested these buses on routes from Kigali to various regions, including Musanze, Bugesera, Muhanga, Rwamagana, Rwagitima, and Nyanza, with exceptional performance. Remarkably, all these routes are possible on a single charge!  We're also delighted to welcome two new operators: Excel Travel & Tours Agency, our first intercity bus operator, and S.U Direct Services LTD.  Importantly, these new buses feature wheelchair ramps, promoting accessibility for all passengers. This expansion marks a significant step forward in sustainable transportation for Rwanda, and we're proud to lead the charge in this eco-friendly revolution! Moses Nderitu, our Managing Director Kenya, recently had a chat with ALEX CHAMWADA OGW, MBS, about e-mobility in Kenya, the progress we have made putting more electric buses on the road, and the impact our dedicated assembly line at Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers has had on job creation and livelihoods. As the local assembly of electric buses takes shape in Kenya, we are proud to lead the way. Listen to the conversation here: https://t.ly/VEBJp #BasiGoDelivers #emobility
