📚 From the CIFOR-ICRAF library New research shows that the moon’s brightness influences how mammals behave — even in the depths of tropical forests. Based on long-term camera trapping data from 86 species in 17 protected forests across three continents, the study found: 🌙 30% of species avoid full moonlight 🌙 20% are drawn to it 🌙 Rodents are more sensitive to moonlight than larger mammals These insights are key to understanding wildlife behavior and improving conservation strategies. CIFOR-ICRAF held a workshop in Maanzoni to strengthen the capacity of the Makueni County Environment Committee (CEC) Resource Mobilization Sub-Committee to secure resources for the County Environment Action Plan (CEAP). The workshop focused on improving resource mobilization to support better environmental management and landscape restoration. It aimed to equip the County Environment Committee with the skills needed to deliver on its mandate and support the county’s environmental goals. On February 25, 2025, CIFOR-ICRAF CEO Eliane Ubalijoro deposited 120,000 seeds from 13 native African tree species into the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in the Arctic, bringing CIFOR-ICRAF’s total contribution to over 1.1 million seeds from 177 species. This effort helps safeguard biodiversity and secure future food systems. Robert Nasi, CIFOR Director General and CIFOR-ICRAF Director of Science, recently met with Nepal’s Minister of Forests and Environment, Honourable Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, Secretary Dr. Deepak Kumar Kharal, and senior officials to strengthen collaboration on sustainable agriculture, forestry, and agroforestry. The Government of Nepal welcomed CIFOR-ICRAF's presence in the country, with discussions focusing on bamboo-based restoration, rubber-based agroforestry, medicinal and aromatic plant value chains, and sustainable forest management. This visit builds on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in January 2025 between CIFOR-ICRAF and Nepal’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development to support Nepal’s broader goals on sustainable agroforestry, livelihood improvement, and natural resource management through innovative research.
