About us
Gifted Community Center-GCC was operationalized in 2019, formed for and by youth with disabilities (all types of disabilities, 10-40 years) in the Kibera slums. We target youth with disabilities in the informal settlements, students/graduates with disabilities, and self-help groups established by youth/persons with disabilities. We exist to promote social and economic independence of youth with disabilities and their families/caregivers in the informal settlements of Kenya. So far, we have reached 2000 persons with disabilities in the slums, 190 students with disabilities, over 500 families/households, and supported establishment of 15 self-help groups. Our programs include: GBV Prevention, HIV Prevention, Mental health, SRHR, Sustainable livelihoods, research and advocacy, and youth governance. We brag ourselves as a leadership hub of youth with disabilities

Mark the time 📌📌 Tomorrow from 7pm I shall be hosting a Twitter Space on @giftedPWDcentre as we discuss the topic of Technology-Facilitated Gender Based Violence. An array of great panelists who share share their expertise and experience into this current silent menace. TFGBV majorly targets women in politics and public life and often such cases go unreported despite the emotional, social and mental impacts on the victims. This is a timely conversation especially at a time when the world is digital. Join us! This session is courtesy of the Transform project by Gifted Community Centre, GCC which seeks to create more awareness on TFGBV. IREX USAID CREAWKenya Siasa Place

Award winning youth with disability organization in Kenya. #Livelihoods #Health #Leadership #Research Research and Advocacy as cross cutting.
#CelebratingInclusionProgress Today, we proudly highlight USAID who has recently released its "Nothing Without Us: USAID Disability Policy 2024." This act shows willingness and commitment on disability inclusion across USAID's work and beyond. "The goal of this policy is to empower and elevate the lives of persons with disabilities in partner countries by supporting USAID and our partners to recognize, respect, value, meaningfully engage, include, and be intentional in supporting persons with disabilities and their representative organizations to benefit equitably from our work as equal partners." We are happy to be implementing the Transform Program, a USAID supported global initiative addressing Technology Facilitated Gender Based Violence (TFGBV) experienced by women in leadership. At GCC we are prioritizing survivors with #disabilities of TFGBV. #DisabilityInclusion #Tech4Change #EndTFGBVKe Katya Vogt IREX George Kogolla United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) UNESCO

#TransformProgram Did you know? IN 2022, EVERY MINUTE OF THE DAY: 💠 1. 7million pieces of content shared on Facebook 💠347, 000 tweets shared on Twitter 💠500 hours of videos uploaded on YouTube How much time do you spent on these platforms? While using these platforms, do you put measures to protect other users or prevent online abuse? What is the role of the tech companies in protecting users from online abuse and data privacy leaks? At GCC, we are leveraging the power of tech and research to create awareness on Technology Facilitated Gender Based Violence (TFGBV) online and offline for women with disabilities. This week, as part of the USAID funded Program, we held our first ever X Space that attracted over 300 attendees, led by both duty bearers and right holders, including Hon. Wanjiku Muhia (MP Kipipiri) representing the Kenya Disability Parliamentarian Association-KEDIPA, legal experts CREAWKenya, tech experts, Nairobi County, Young Women's Leadership Institute, Pollicy, women and student with disabilities' leaders, among others. The E-Conversation sought to raise awareness and initiate policy discussions leading to policy change on TFGBV against women with disabilities in public colleges and political parties. We appreciate everyone who was part of this and we hope to see more in future conversations. #EndTFGBVKe #Tech4Change #DisabilityInclusion

I'm priviledged to have been part of the USAID Mulika Initiative Mentorship programme for the youth in Nairobi Region. Many thanks to National Council of churches of Kenya NCCK for the opportunity to impact knowledge and skills to fellow youths on becoming successful entrepreneurs and self employed. The monthly training sessions that ran for six months, provided a comprehensive guidance, support and character development opportunities to foster personal and professional growth. The topics were carefully designed to equip the youths with necessary tools, knowledge and values to become proactive agents of positive change as well as contribute to peace, cohesion and economic sustainability in their communities. I'm a proud mentor having successfully completed the training with four groups of (45)participants and seeing them graduate and receive their certificates truly melted my heart. I recently presented recommendations on the upcoming International day of Persons with Disabilities to the Nairobi County Technical work group for PWDs. This is courtesy of Gifted Community Centre, GCC that has been serving for the longest at this forum. At this meeting over 20 Organisations of Persons with Disabilities were represented and offered their valuable contributions on matters of Persons with Disabilities especially those in the communities they serve. As a young person with disability I am forever grateful to have been given countless opportunities to not only share my lived experience but also learn from others within the Disability rights movement. I am and will continue to be a change maker and a Disability champion in society. #NairobiCounty #Disabilitymainstreaming #Inclusion #GEM #youth

With great pleasure, I facilitated the Comrades' Cafe at the University of Nairobi, targeting student leaders from various campuses and leading discussions on Technology Facilitated Gender Based Violence. It was worth noting that many of the student leaders were not aware of the existing policies in the schools, hence intentionally, we developed an action plan that will raise awareness on the policies around TFGBV by the students. They shared their experiences on TFGBV during campaigns and their leadership tenures. Upon discussion of the different forms of TFGBV, they were able to realize the depth of this 'silent' killer. It's important to create more awareness around TFGBV. Key emphasis that I did include: ✅ Young people have often been 'used' by politicians to propagate TFGBV especially during electioneering period. They need to understand that TFGBV is a crime and there are legal actions that can be taken on that. ✅ As much as digital platforms have created the toxic environment, we, as young people, should focus on harnessing the opportunities on such platforms to inspire, grow and transform rather than harm. ✅ Report! Report! If you're a victim of TFGBV, don't die or struggle in silence. Seek help. Talk about it. Great plans ahead to create more awareness on such issues and reduce cases of TGBV in Universities by Gifted Community Centre, GCC IREX USAID
