Knowledge is power. 💪 Prior to delving into an intensive entrepreneurship and financial literacy course, the GIZ Kenya ProSEET project in #Turkana West organized a 5-day Life skills and Psychosocial Training for its 18 business development trainers! They dove into a variety of topics, including Personal Management, Relationship Building, and Decision Making! Our trainers also explored the application of life skills in citizenship and social concerns, as well as in business contexts. We are excited to see the positive impact this will have on the local community there! The Promoting Employability & Entrepreneurship in Turkana West (ProSEET) project focuses on strengthening the socio-economic self-reliance of youth in the refugee and host communities of Turkana West subcounty. It is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and funded by Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The launch of the follow-on phase of the #GIZ's Employment Promotion for Women for the Green Transformation in Africa #WE4D–Kenya and Acacia EPZ Limited partnership was marked by an engaging exchange on sustainable practices, resilience, and community-driven progress with Gum Arabic #entrepreneurs in Turkana. The partnership, which promotes the integration of women along the Gum Arabic value chain seeks to #increaseemployment, improve working conditions and promote #womenempowerment in Kenya´s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands #ASALs.   Through an innovative agent model, this phase will localize aggregation and market access for the gum collectors to improve reliability and avoid complex distant markets. The agent model also promotes #foodsecurity via agent centres/shops dubbed 'Dukawalla' which provides basic food commodities at reduced prices in exchange for gum. This promises to support household needs directly and ease living costs for these hard-working women gum collectors.   Additionally, this phase introduces key elements like establishing Acacia tree nurseries and briquette-making from gum waste, promoting both ecological sustainability and economic opportunity.   The #WE4D-Acacia project, supported by the governments of GERMANY and NORWAY, is targeting 7,500 women with capacity development initiatives to enhance competitiveness, improve working conditions, and foster #WomenLedDevelopment.

🌐 Reducing Discrimination for Better Integration of Migrants 🌐 With inputs from around 100 local NGOs, the East and Horn of Africa Anti-Trafficking (EHAAT) Network presented 13 recommendations at the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) Review, which include a call to reduce discrimination and xenophobia against migrants and trafficking survivors. By addressing stigma, particularly for vulnerable groups like mothers and survivors of sexual exploitation, we can create pathways for genuine social integration. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dMqukiBK The participation of EHAAT at the GCM Review was supported by the GIZ-coordinated Better Migration Management (BMM) Programme, funded by the European Union and Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). #AntiDiscrimination #SocialCohesion #GCMReview #EHAAT #TEI

🌍 Wrapping up an insightful day at AfriLabs in South Africa! On 6 November, Matthias Rehfeld, joined a panel discussion on "Sustainable Business Models for Makerspaces." Together with industry leaders, CK Japheth from Village Innovation Network , Oge Nnafife of Innovation Support Network, Gertrude Mawuena Goh, MBA, PMP®, Business Model Consultant, and Andrew Lamb from Internet of Production Alliance, they tackled the complexities of creating resilient, impactful business models for innovators and makerspaces. 💬 Matthias shared SPARK’s vision of empowering #startups with targeted #resources and #networks, emphasising the need for funding approaches that prioritise long-term growth over quick wins. As he noted, sustainable solutions often come from within the makerspace community itself, rather than being shaped solely by external budgets. Honest conversations like these are essential for fostering a collaborative, circular economy that truly supports #climatetech. 🤝 We were thrilled to engage with stakeholders from across Africa, building connections and exploring opportunities for collaborative growth in the innovation ecosystem. 👉 Let’s keep these important dialogues going. A double win: Celebrating #Turkana Culture and success at the Trade Fair! The quiet town of Lodwar recently turned into a buzz of activities as it hosted the 2024 Tobong’u Lore Turkana Cultural Festival in October. This annual event which aims to celebrate the Ateker cluster communities’ #culture while promoting #peace and #tourism has grown to attract thousands of visitors from across the globe. This year, the festival was even graced by H.E the President of the Republic of Kenya, Dr. William Samoei Ruto PHD Ruto accompanied by several government dignitaries. Activities during the 4-day festival include cultural exhibitions, dances, music, a trade fair, various art performances and the crowning of Miss Tourism Turkana. GIZ Kenya was not missing in action either – 12 beneficiaries of ProSEET project were present at the #trade fair to showcase their #skills and products in various trades. From glass work to pastry and bakery, bead work, soap production, artwork and tailoring, our beneficiaries generated impressive sales of over KSH 130,000! And the highlight? A stunning art piece sold to one of the dignitaries! This is a testament to the creativity and hard work of our local talent.

Strengthening Citizen Engagement Through Collaboration and Innovation! Last week marked a significant milestone as Kawangware Youth Paralegal Trust (KAYPAT), in collaboration with GIZ Kenya, hosted a strategic community and stakeholder engagement forum bringing together community members, stakeholders, and government officials. The focus is on creating a platform for constructive feedback and leveraging digital tools to amplify citizen voices and promote transparent governance in Dagoretti Sub-County. During the sessions, we identified key challenges that need to be addressed to maximise the effectiveness of our civic engagement tools and digital platforms. These challenges include affordability, accessibility, capacity-building for stakeholders, and the need for stronger referral mechanisms. KAYPAT’s digital platforms—Jicho, Jumuika, Jua, and Jukwaa—play a vital role in bridging the gap between citizens and authorities, fostering a dynamic feedback loop to enhance governance accountability. Our mission remains clear: Strengthen community voices, drive meaningful change, and build a culture of accountability. Together, let’s keep advancing towards a more inclusive and transparent future!

🌊 Conserving Coastal & Marine Ecosystems for a Sustainable Future 🌊 As the 16th COP under the Convention on Biological Diversity is coming to an end, it is clear that our coastal and marine ecosystems are critical not only for preserving biodiversity but also for supporting community livelihoods. Through the BMUVI-IKI and EU-co-funded project Pwani Yetu and Transboundary conservation and sustainable management of coastal and marine biodiversity, Kenya, Tanzania, have supported the training to 43 community scouts and stakeholders across Kenya and Tanzania in sustainable practices, gender inclusion, and conservation strategies, aligning with the #COP16 goals for global biodiversity protection. One major focus of the project has been aligning Kenya’s National Biodiversity Strategies with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (#COP15), addressing cross-border conservation and enhancing marine ecosystem protection. In partnership with the Nairobi Convention and WIOMSA, we are creating a roadmap for a transboundary marine conservation area between Kenya and Tanzania, set to be recognized as an Other Effective Conservation Measure (OECM). In addition to ecosystem protection, this project emphasizes sustainable livelihoods, such as training apiculture farmers in Kwale County in honey production. With an inclusive approach, we also provide community scouts with training on human rights and gender in coastal resource management, ensuring equity in conservation efforts. Initiatives like the Blue Carbon and Fisheries study in Lamu and Kwale Counties and supporting Mikoko Pamoja’s community-led blue carbon trading, demonstrate our commitment to sustainable solutions that benefit both the environment and local economies. Together, we’re building a future where preservation and economic growth thrive side by side. 🌍💧 #SustainableDevelopment #MarineEcosystems #BiodiversityConservation #COP16 #CoastalConservation #SustainableDevelopment #MarineEcosystems #GIZAgricultureKE   Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection European Union Kenya Wildlife Service KWS Service CORDIO East Africa WWF Mwambao Coastal Community Network Tanzania
