🌍🌟 What an EXCITING week it's been! Just had an incredible opportunity to attend the IEEE PowerAfrica Conference 2024 in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 6th - 12th October '24 ✈️ Upon landing at the O.R. Tambo International Airport in Gauteng, SA, I knew this was the advent of a truly memorable journey. The theme of this year's edition was, “Towards Ensuring Energy Security in Africa, “. I witnessed firsthand how professionals from across the globe are tackling the energy challenges of our continent from Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd, IEEE Standards Association | IEEE SA IEEE Smart Village, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR),University of KwaZulu-Natal, Tshwane University of Technology, University of Johannesburg, Sanedi.org , RENUMESH TECHNOLOGIES 🚀 I have been thrilled to be an audience member of high level panel discussions around the Power Africa initiative. 🌟 Day 4 of IEEE Kenyatta University SB Innovation Week and Industry Symposium 2024🌟 Thursday commenced with speeches from the IEEE Kenya Section Leadership as well as KU SB & KU School of Engineering. The speakers highlighted the role of IEEE in fostering innovation, providing students and young professionals with platforms for research, learning, and networking. The leadership emphasized the importance of nurturing technical talent and providing opportunities for the youth to participate in global innovations. A highlight of the event was an alumni roundtable discussion featuring KU graduates. The discussion offered students a glimpse into the diverse career paths available after graduation and the impact of IEEE on their professional journeys. Industry experts from leading companies like Google and Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) provided insights into technology trends, industry demands, and career opportunities. Speakers discussed the growing importance of AI, machine learning, and renewable energy in shaping the future of technology. The event culminated in a vibrant exhibition of student projects and poster presentations and industry innovations. Students showcased their innovative work in areas such as smart systems, embedded systems, and IoT applications. 🌟 Day 3 of IEEE Kenyatta University SB Innovation Week and Industry Symposium 2024🌟 The morning kicked off with a successful industrial visit to Tatu City. We had an incredible day exploring the future of urban development and technology. The members learned firsthand about their groundbreaking projects and sustainable initiatives in action. A huge thanks to the Tatu City team for their warm hospitality and insightful tour. In the afternoon, our attendees delved into an IoT and Embedded Systems Workshop, where they gained experience building smart solutions with Arduino, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi. Special thanks to Angaza Elimu and Loci Engineering Limited for their guidance. The day's events concluded with a distinguished lecture by Dr Justin Dauwels, who presented on Generative AI. His session discussed the advancements in AI models that are capable of generating new content, including images, music, and even code. He explored the potential applications of generative AI in industries such as creative arts, engineering, and research, pointing out the ethical challenges and the future of generative technologies. 🚀Day 2 of IEEE Innovation Week🌟 We were honored to host @Dr Bjorn Schuller, a renowned expert in AI for healthcare, who delivered a captivating virtual keynote on the integration of AI in patient care. Dr Schuller's presentation focused on how artificial intelligence is revolutionalizing diagnosis, treatment, and management. He delved into practical applications such as predictive models and AI-assisted surgeries, highlighting the growing relevance of AI in improving healthcare outcomes. In addition, we were privileged to hear from Prof Maokun Li, who spoke on Machine Learning(ML) in Electromagnetics and Biomedical Imaging. Prof. Li's session explored the use of ML models to process and analyze complex electromagnetic signals, with applications in imaging technologies that assist in better diagnosis and medical research. He emphasized the transformative potential of ML in biomedical engineering. These virtual sessions were met with great enthusiasm from our attendees, who found them highly relevant to the emerging intersection of AI, ML and healthcare technologies. IEEE Kenyatta University Student Branch Student Spotlight Ian Chege, MIEEE, has been an exceptional volunteer in our student branch and we celebrate him for his participation in representing IEEE Kenya Section with his team by presenting their projects in Tunis Science City, Tunisia at the IEEE YESIST12 2024 finals where they performed exceptionally well. 💯 There were a total of 10 teams, with 3 teams presenting physically (offline mode) and 7 teams presenting virtually (online mode). The teams were spread across 5 tracks focused on specific themes, and were competing against 35+ teams from India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Egypt, Tunisia and Bangladesh in each #track. Two teams won in their respective tracks, with two others being runners up and getting honourable mentions. 💯 The #winning teams were Unguvu (Victoria Sitati) in #Special Track, and Sniffer ( Irene Korir Ryan Kiprotich and Ian Chege, MIEEE ) in Maker Fair Track.
