It is deeply shocking and saddening to see young lives continually affected by school fires! Our deepest condolences go out to the families of the over 20 children whose lives were lost in the recent Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County. Njoki Mwarumba Ph.D. discussed the urgent need for stronger Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Disaster Risk Management (DRM) strategies in our educational institutions in the face of these heart-wrenching incidents. Schools should be safe spaces for learning and growth, not places of vulnerability. Areas we must prioritize: ✅ Risk Assessments – Regular evaluations to identify potential fire hazards and vulnerabilities in schools. ✅ Emergency Preparedness Plans – Training for both staff and students on how to respond in case of fires and other emergencies. ✅ Fire Safety Infrastructure – Equipping schools with fire extinguishers, alarms, and accessible emergency exits. ✅ Building Resilience – A holistic approach to DRM ensures schools are prepared, communities are involved, and children are safeguarded. An #allofsocietyapproach requires all stakeholders to collaborate towards ensuring safety and resilience in the face of growing risks. We owe it to ourselves and we owe it to future generations! In line with our overarching theme of Building MSME Resilience, Invest in Africa participated in the Annual Global Flood Partnership (GFP) Conference held this week 24th-26th July, themed EW4ALL (Early Warning For All): Strengthening resilience against flooding - Know, Monitor, Communicate, Respond. Following our Public Participation Sensitization forum on the National Disaster Risk Management Bill in collaboration with ASSEK last week, Invest in Africa submitted our input, inclusive of extensive input from diverse stakeholders, to the Clerk of Senate.
