  • Today, at the #SafaricomDecode East Africa Edition, Ms Joyce Njogu, MCIM, MBA, Head of Consulting and Sustainability at Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM), participated in a panel discussion focused on bridging Africa's digital divide through local manufacturing. This insightful conversation brought together key players in the technology and innovation sectors, highlighting the role of local manufacturing in fostering digital inclusion across the continent. The panel featured other experts, including Karanja Gichiri, Head of Venture Management at Safaricom PLC, Barrack Odero, Head of Technology Enterprise Solutions at Safaricom PLC, and Martin Kingori, General Manager at M-KOPA. These panelists underscored the importance of local content, assembly, and affordability in driving the uptake of mobile devices, which has risen by 2.1 million units over the last quarter. Ms. Njogu emphasized the transformative potential of robotics and AI in skill development, noting that KAM partners with institutions to offer apprenticeships and improve curricula. In collaboration with Moringa School, KAM provides platforms for students to engage with industry and analyze real-world data sets. She also mentioned the upcoming Young Innovators Awards at the Energy Management Awards coming up in May, encouraging the participation of young innovators in the manufacturing sector to showcase their innovations for consideration. The panel also highlighted Africa's significant challenge of connecting nearly a billion people to mobile internet. Affordability remains a major barrier, with local smartphone manufacturing emerging as a key solution. Through government initiatives and strategic partnerships with telecommunications companies, there is an ongoing push to produce low-cost devices that are more accessible to the population. The Safaricom Decode event is a premier gathering that brings together industry experts, government officials, technologists, students, and thought leaders to explore the latest advancements and innovations in engineering and technology. #KAMAdvocacy

  • KAM in partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH held a 2-day workshop for Quality Management Systems (QMS) as part of a rollout for the first cohort of the Q-Boost Training Quality Management System practices based on ISO 9001:2015. The program is geared towards enhancing the capacity of export-ready and near-export-ready companies in Kenya. Quality is an intrinsic element of competitiveness in domestic and international trade. Enterprises often need to implement quality management systems (QMS) and meet private sustainability standards if they intend to access new markets and sustain the existing ones. The objective of the QBoost program is to enhance the ability of manufacturers to meet the standard compliances so that they comply with the demands of domestic, regional, and international buyers. That way, exports can be increased and value chains expanded, facilitating economic growth and job creation. The training sought to share the details of the Alliance for Quality program implemented by GIZ and several African countries. It also aimed at onboarding the first cohort of companies into a 3-month technical assistance program. The following topics were covered: 1. Customer Focus 2. Establishing a Quality Policy and Objectives 3. Integrating QMS into Business Processes 4. Providing Resource 5. Promoting Continuous Improvement 6. Leadership Communication and Engagement 7. Supporting Risk-Based Thinking This program is designed to enable manufacturers to meet standards compliance requirements, thereby further enhancing their product quality and regional and global export capacity. By focusing on these areas, company leadership ensures that the QMS is effective, aligned with business goals, and drives continual improvement.
