Kenya’s 2024 Finance Bill sparked a wave of digital protests, with Gen Z, millennials, and citizens uniting online against Value Added Tax (VAT) hikes, vehicle levies, and subsidy cuts. 🚨 Using digital tools, they simplified the bill’s impact, mobilized locally and globally, and demanded accountability. From the first #RejectFinanceBill2024 post to global solidarity protests, social media amplified the movement's reach, showing how ICT transforms civic participation. 🎯 Key highlights of the report: 1. Coordination on X for protest guidance and documenting police brutality, with videos like those analyzed by CNN’s Larry Madowo. 2. High visibility of hashtags like #OccupyParliament and #RutoMustGo, igniting global support from cities like London, Berlin, and New York. 3. Celebrities and public figures are joining online, including a viral video of anchor Shishka Arora taking on the #AngukaNayo challenge. 4. Gen Z-led movements secured government concessions, inspiring similar actions in Nigeria and Uganda. 5. Crowdfunding to cover protest-related medical, legal, and funeral expenses. Increased disinformation, with AI-generated fake content and digital authoritarianism tactics like internet throttling reported. 6. Twitter Spaces became hubs for real-time discussions, and “doxxing” or “Salimia” publicly pressured parliamentarians and officials. 7. Civil society organizations (CSOs) play a vital role in mobilizing public opinion and supporting digital rights. This moment highlights the need for transparent data practices, digital rights protection, and stronger digital literacy so every voice is heard. 💡 Read the full report on these insights and actions in the link below! https://lnkd.in/dM5ubbmW #FinanceBill2024 #DigitalRights #CivicEngagement #KenyaProtests

How do WACC partners experience digital justice — or injustice — in their respective contexts? Yesterday, our partner forum #waccKathmandu2024 opened with a chance to share and discuss in small groups with partners from different parts of Africa, Asia, Southeastern Europe, and the Middle East. Here with Pie Mabanta-Fenomeno of Communication Foundation for Asia (CFA) in the Philippines, Abida Pehlic of Udruzenje "Novi put" in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mahmoud Al-Borini of Community Media Network in Jordan, Neema Masitsa KICTANet in Kenya, and Mark Aquino of Migrante Middle East in the United Arab Emirates. We're organizing the WACC partner forum in collaboration with AMARC Asia-Pacific to deepen the understanding of communication rights as the essential building blocks for social justice in our digital world. The aim is to give a communication rights response to the Global Digital Compact and WSIS+20. #DigitalJustice #CommunicationRights #GlobalDigitalCompact #WSIS20 With Asia Pacific Mission for Migrants, Asia Pacific Research Network (APRN), Asmita Women's Publishing House, Media & Resource Organization (ASMITA), Centre for Gender, Family, and Environment in Development (CGFED), Common Room Networks Foundation (Common Room), Computer Professionals' Union, Gender & Media Connect Official Page, Ideosync Media Combine, Indigenous Television, Local Democracy Agency (LDA) Tunisia, Methodist Development and Relief Agency (MeDRA), Mission for Migrant Workers, Uganda Media Women's Association (UMWA), Uks Research, Resource, and Publication Centre, Dhaka University Department of Mass Communication & Journalism, Vision Association for Culture and Arts (VACA), WACC Asia, Women of Uganda Network Tasneem Ahmar Suman Basnet Christel Kimberly Cantillas David Iribagiza Dev Kumar Sunuwar Ramakrishnan Nagarajan Gitiara Nasreen Jack Nassar Kudzaiishe Ndawana Vincent Rajkumar, Sarita Shrestha Patience Zirima Brot für die Welt WSIS Process 📷 Robert Bichler
