OS pt.2: Why The Operating System? A modern computer is a very complex system. It consists of a processor, memory, printer, keyboard, mouse, display, network interface, and various other Input/Output devices. If all application programmers had to understand how all these things work in detail, no programming would ever take place. Also, managing all these hardware components and using them optimally for the different tasks assigned to the computer, is a very difficult job. For this reason modern computers are equiped with a layer of software called the Operating System. It provides user programs and programmers with a simpler and cleaner model of the computer for application programs to run on, and programmers to write application programs for. It also manages the the different resources needed to complete the different tasks assigned to the computer. The computer user accesses the Operating System via an interface program called the SHELL for text based instructions and GUI or “gooey” in full, Graphical User Interface for icon based instructions. OS part 1: Introduction Have you heard of Android, IOS, Mac OS, Linux, Windows? If yes, great, you are not very new to this, if no, worry not. This is the reason we are having this OS series of lectures. The above mentioned words represent some of the popular Operating Systems in the market. Operating Systems are also called OS in short. Thus moving forward, we will use both Operating System and OS interchangeably. The OS series of lectures is targeted to both hobbyists and professionals looking to understand the Operating System at a deeper level. If that is you, please buckle up and let's journey together. A couple of things before we get started. First, get yourself a copy of Modern Operating Systems (Fourth Edition) by Andrew S. Tanenbaum and Herbert Bos. This will be our reference book. Second, don't take everything from us as the bible truth, do your own research and confirm the facts presented here. Third, if you don't get it the first time, try again before asking for help.
