Is Artificial Intelligence (AI) a Fact-Checking or a Mobilization Tool? As a Digital Democracy Fellow under Constitution and Reform Education Consortium (CRECO), Boniface Harrison shares insights on the role of AI in countering misinformation and disinformation. “Fact-checking is unbiased. It gives you information and context, the way it is... At any point where a fact-checking tool provides an opinion, that is skewing people's perceptions.” For AI to be effective, it must deliver raw data and context with neutrality inorder to empower public understanding, support democratic values, and enhance informed decision-making without distorting the truth with subjective judgments. Over the past few weeks, we have been engaged in an intensive process of writing policy briefs at Kenya’s globally recognized think tank, the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA Kenya). The briefs will be featured at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), the highest decision-making forum on global climate issues under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The conference will take place from November 11th to 22nd, 2024, in Baku, Azerbaijan. In climate action work and overall community development, embracing diversity is key. We need to bring in new people through reaching out far and wide. This way, we plant change agents across society and soon we will have more informed, developing and thriving communities. Together, we can make a difference. Insights shared during the 4th Youth Symposium on Climate Action by Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA Kenya). We joined Action Aid Kenya in a forum to discuss the existing policy challenges in the education sector, particularly in higher learning. Boniface Harrison shared key insights, including: 1. The need for a predictable funding model to provide clarity to citizens, unlike the current situation where the funding model has been changing for the past two years. 2. That it is important to make all citizens the cornerstone of every policy formulation. Public participation must be enhanced to ensure that education policies reflect the aspirations of the people especially parents and guardians unlike the existing situation where the government has been over reliant on the opinions of only the student leaders and vice-chancellors. We’re delighted to have participated in the The Technical University of Kenya Career Day, where our Executive Director, Boniface Harrison delivered a peer address as an alumnus of the university. He shared key insights saying: 1. “Utilize your free time wisely. Attend events, learn new skills, and connect with people who might link you to job opportunities or other valuable networks.” 2. “Be adaptable and open-minded in the real world. You may not land your dream job immediately, but adapt to survive, and keep working towards your goals.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/di783dK7

Have you ever been in a setting with people from different communities or even parts of the world? Our most surprising moments at the Climate Justice Camp 2024 were meeting people who don’t speak our language, hold different cultural beliefs and during that period, they enjoyed foods that were quite new to them—East African cuisine was an adventure for many. For instance, in a conversation with a lady from Vietnam, she shared that it’s not illegal to eat dogs in her country. She explained a tradition where newborns are fed the brain of an animal, and those given brains from fierce animals like leopards or lions are believed to grow up more intelligent than those fed with brains from more common pets like cats. Beyond climate justice, these exchanges were incredibly enriching. Understanding a culture and its unique perspectives first helps us to better address some of the challenges communities face. Our Executive Director believes in creating opportunities for young people to gain exposure, build valuable networks and develop skills to earn sustainable living. At this forum, he requested all panelists and invited guests to share any openings for youth within their organizations, which we recently highlighted on our platforms. This is an encouragement for the youth to be proactive and willing to invest in themselves for long-term growth. Have a successful week!
