Data Protection Regulation: Enhancing or Stifling FinTech Innovation? I was privileged to engage in a Panel discussion about How Fintech is driving Mobile Money & Micro-Investments in Africa on Day 2/3 of the Africa eDigital Connect Summit. The summit was hosted alongside the China Trade Week at the Edge Convention Centre in Partnership with Women inTechnology and Innovation Africa (WTIA) & KNCCI NAIROBI COUNTY amongst others. During the discussion, i highlighted on the fintech sector's great reliance on personal and financial data which raises significant concerns about data protection & governance. The discussion further highlighted the question on whether Data Protection Regulation enhances or stifles Innovation. Whereas Regulation may be viewed as overly restrictive and may impose high compliance costs, particularly on Fintech start-ups and stringent rules that could create barriers for new market entrants, adoption of the PrivacyByDesign approach by Fintech companies, which is rooted on the Data Protection principles such as Data Minimization & User Consent, can actually foster Innovation by building consumer/user trust which will enable such companies gain a competitive edge in the market. The same notwithstanding, there's need for a balanced approach between Regulation and innovation as the accepted norm is that regulation follows innovation. I'm grateful to the Founder of eDigital Connect, Sylvia Kaberia for extending the invite to participate in the summit and engage in mind stimulating conversations around Data Governance in the Fintech Sector with fellow Panelists Vinod Sharma Sharma Muriuki Collins and Benaiah Wepundi, as well as vibrant participants. Let's keep the conversation going and the Fintech Sector growing!
