Local evidence for local solutions
About us
Local evidence for local solutions The Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP) is a Southern-led global organisation dedicated to supporting development in the Global South. PEP does this by providing high-quality, locally-generated evidence that informs better decisions in policy and practice. To achieve this, PEP supports the work, strengthens the capacity and promotes the findings of local researchers in developing countries; facilitates engagement and collaboration between researchers and policymakers; and creates a space for learning and knowledge-sharing between researchers throughout the globe.

#Didyouknow? Facts from PEP's Working Paper 'Leading the way: Fostering fair North-South research collaborations' Many Southern researchers highlighted feeling "treated as second-class partners" and included as an afterthought in projects dominated by Northern institutions. Addressing these power imbalances is essential to creating equitable and inclusive partnerships. Let’s discuss how we can create fair and equal research collaborations during our November 5th webinar. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gcYt_VJb Join us on November 5th for the webinar on 'Enhancing North-South Collaboration in Global Development Research and Policy' to explore how we can foster fairer collaborations and support direct funding for Southern institutions. For over 20 years, PEP has been a strong advocate for localization in development research, working to integrate Southern perspectives into the global policy landscape. The webinar builds on our longstanding commitment and supports our Call to Action to achieve equity in development research. Let’s come together to discuss how we can foster more inclusive and equitable participation for researchers from the Global South – with a focus on women researchers – in collaboration with the Global North. #Didyouknow? Facts from PEP's Working Paper 'Research Collaboration in Development Economics: Understanding Disparities in Publication Patterns' Only 15% of articles in top development economics journals were written by researchers based in developing countries, while 72% were authored by researchers based in developed countries? (Amarante & Zurbrigg, 2023). We need to amplify Southern voices in global research. #Didyouknow? Facts from PEP's working paper 'Leading the Way: Fostering North-South Research Collaborations'. Gender in research collaborations is often overlooked. According to the study, "Some researchers highlighted other power differentials outside of the North-South split, particularly the role of gender". 🆕 Bridging global divides: How Southern researchers can lead sustainable development 🌍 The underrepresentation of Southern researchers in academic journals and conferences impacts the global development research and policy agenda. Initiatives that address the skewed composition of editorial boards, the barriers faced by Southern researchers in attending conferences, and that support international research collaborations are needed. Today on VoxDev, Ana Lucia Kassouf (USP - Universidade de São Paulo), Verónica Amarante (Universidad de la República) and Jane Mariara (University of Nairobi, PEP - Partnership for Economic Policy) explore the impacts of, and solutions to, the #underrepresentation of Southern #researchers in academia: https://lnkd.in/e5QmRg7W

#Didyouknow? Facts from PEP's Working Paper 'Leading the Way: Fostering North-South Research Collaborations' Access to funding was the main force behind Southern researchers’ participation in North-South collaborations; however, this often meant they felt they could not voice their concerns for fear of losing funding. Social norms in rural Benin create barriers to the empowerment of girls and women, especially in the face of climate-induced income shocks, according to new research supported by PEP. The PEP project team, using local field data, found that harmful practices such as early marriage and school dropouts persist despite existing policies. These social norms continue to undermine the effectiveness of resilience programs designed to empower rural women. The research highlights that integrating gender-sensitive interventions and flexible financial support can better support women’s economic empowerment in Benin’s rural communities. This study is part of a collaborative research program funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, with support from PEP. 📘 Policy brief: https://lnkd.in/gefFPpsT Learn more about the program: https://lnkd.in/eCFYzPRW #PEPresearch #EmpoweringWomen #LocalSolutions
