In 2022, four out of five young Kenyans who didn’t vote refused to vote because of a loss of trust in the ability of the leaders on the ballot to change their lives for the better.    This disillusionment and economic hardship tipped the scales and led to this year’s Gen-Z protests. In our recently published Youth Pulse, young people have given practical recommendations on the change they want, including accountability from leaders.    Let’s talk. As the Gen-Z-led protests in Kenya continue, young people are desperate to be heard.     These protests are fuelled by a unified call from young Kenyans nationwide. A couple of days ago, we partnered with Axum for the unforgettable experience of The Wellbeing Project inaugural Hearth Summit in Nairobi! 🔥🌍 As a proud partner, we were inspired by the incredible energy and passion of change makers that had gathered to shape Africa’s future by focusing on intergenerational wellbeing and lifelong learning. Our very own Samuel Mugacha was part of the intergenerational Wellbeing plenary that looked into the Interconnectedness of individuals, families and communities and the impact that their collective experiences have on the ecosystem. Key takeaways: ✅ For Africa by Africa. Homegrown solutions work, we have what it takes to solve Africa's challenges. ✅ Healing is a collective effort. No one person or institution has the ability to shape well-being. ✅ Healing is possible. If we invest our time and resources in the right initiatives, a better future for young people is possible. Shujaaz was in India for the annual consortium partners meeting for #AgencyForAll, a program that seeks to understand what agency means for young people and barrier-breaking solutions to their challenges.    Tabitha Masese and Liza Murungu from Shujaaz Inc. shared the formative research findings on young Kenyans' beliefs and ideas about agency. Farida Nzilani then presented how Shujaaz media converts rich insights like those into engaging and impactful social change campaigns. 🔊 Shujaaz Inc is excited to speak about Youth and Wellbeing at Hearth Summit Nairobi today! 🙌 6 in 10 young Kenyans have experienced challenges with their mental health, with the majority of those reporting experiencing feelings of depression, anxiety or panic and panic attacks. This data from our flagship Young and Kenyan report underpins the importance and urgency of this conversation. Our friends at Imaginable Futures, sponsors of the Hearth Summit, invited Nya Mona M., our Head of Programmes and Partnerships, to speak on how we can support young people in protecting their mental health. The Youth and Wellbeing theme explores the different issues that youth face, including mental health, civic engagement, drug use, the effects of social media, and peer pressure. Nya spoke on the panel with other industry experts, such as Tom Osborn from Shamiri Institute, REHEMA N. from SmArtIe Me Initiative, and Okanda S. Eugine, BSc. from Unlock Young Leaders Summit. The panel opened an intergenerational conversation to rethink what it means to empower young citizens. What do young Kenyans want to see in the face of the ongoing Gen Z protests? 🤔 Shujaaz hosted a Mic Yetu (Our Microphone) conversation on Facebook Live, where young people talked about the Kenya they wanted to see. Mic Yetu is an ongoing series of online discussions that empower young people to engage with their peers and leadership. In our latest GenZ Youth Pulse, many of the young Kenyans we spoke to are feeling deeply frustrated—with the Finance Bill and more—but still strongly believe in the country’s democracy. Young Kenyans want to be heard and share clear and practical suggestions with the government. More than ever, they’re committed to standing for the future they want.
