Lewa’s Women’s Microenterprise Programme has empowered 2,050 ladies in 12 neighbouring communities over the past year. By providing capital, training, and mentorship, we’ve supported them in improving their livelihoods and reducing their reliance on natural resources. This aligns with Lewa’s commitment to community development and supports several Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). #SDG5 #WomenInBusiness #WomenEmpowerment

A Catalyst and Model for Conservation based in Kenya.
About us
Founded in 1995 from the then Ngare Sergoi Rhino Sanctuary, the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy serves as a catalyst for conservation across northern Kenya and beyond. Lewa envisions a future where people across Kenya continue to value, protect and benefit from wildlife. This future depends on communities being able to derive their day-to-day livelihoods in ways that are compatible with thriving wildlife habitat. As a result, Lewa invests heavily in the livelihoods of its neighbours through programmes in education, healthcare, water, micro-enterprise, youth empowerment and more. These programmes have enabled the Conservancy to build strong relationships and goodwill within the neighbouring communities and ensured that people and wildlife both benefit from Lewa’s conservation efforts. As a catalyst and champion of this model that puts people at the centre of conservation, Lewa has influenced and supported the conservancy management for both private and community lands across northern Kenya. Lewa is also a unique entity in that it is a privately managed conservation area, owned and run by Kenyan people, for the benefit of local communities and Kenyans at large. For the last three decades, Lewa’s innovative practices have resulted in thriving black rhino habitat and population, which in turn creates a robust ecosystem for a multitude of species including the endangered Grevy’s zebra, elephant, lion, cheetah, giraffe and more. Lewa also practices a tourism model that has a low impact on the environment but is maximised to support a proportion of its running costs. The Conservancy also hosts the annual, world-famous Safaricom Marathon.

Today, we joined the global community in celebrating World Food Day with a Farmer’s Open Day at Munanda Primary School. Alongside 30+ industry partners, we showcased climate-smart technologies for sustainable farming and food security. Some of the highlights included conservation agriculture, soil health management, water harvesting, drip irrigation, drought-resistant seeds, IPM, and agroforestry. We also explored renewable energy like solar and biogas, market linkages, and post-harvest handling. Thank you to everyone who made this day a success! 🌾 📸 Kimani Githuku ,MPRSK/Lewa Conservancy #WorldFoodDay #SustainableAgriculture #LewaWildlifeConservancy

Red-billed oxpeckers and rhinos share a symbiotic relationship, although some argue that it may be more skewed in favour of the oxpeckers due to excessive pecking. Known as the “rhino’s guard,” oxpeckers alert rhinos, who have poor vision, to approaching predators. Studies suggest this partnership can also help rhinos avoid poachers. In addition to acting as early warning systems, oxpeckers remove parasites and ticks from rhinos, providing relief from irritation. However, excessive pecking can sometimes lead to bleeding. Despite the potential drawbacks, the relationship between red-billed oxpeckers and rhinos remains mutually beneficial, demonstrating the intricate connections between species in the wild. 📸 Boris Polo Adventures #WildlifeWednesday #Rhino #Wildlife

Lewa’s Bursary program is a pillar of our efforts to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education. By providing scholarships to marginalised children, we are ensuring access to education for those who may otherwise be excluded. Furthermore, we have constructed and maintained modern school facilities—including classrooms, libraries, and laboratories—to create a conducive learning environment. #SDG4 #Education #Lewa

Residents of rural areas often face long journeys to access essential healthcare services, even for routine medical needs. To address this challenge, Lewa supports three clinics in Ntirimiti, Leparua, and Ngare-Ndare and owns one located within Lewa. In 2023 alone, 53,766 patients received care at these clinics. By reducing the distance to healthcare facilities and offering subsidised healthcare, Lewa has made substantial progress toward achieving United Nations’ SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being and Kenya’s Healthcare Vision 2030. #SDG3 #Vision2030 #Lewa #Healthcare

Kenya has set ambitious goals of planting 15 billion trees by 2032 and restoring 10.6 million hectares of degraded land. Today, on Mazingira (Environment) Day, citizens are encouraged to actively participate in environmental activities to help achieve the goals. These activities include planting trees, participating in clean-up initiatives, and attending forums promoting sustainable practices like waste reduction and pollution control. 📸 Martin Buzora #MazingiraDay #Kenya #GreenFuture #Sustainability

A child’s journey to success starts with a full stomach. Unfortunately, drought over the last few years has disrupted education in our region, leaving many children struggling to focus and learn. To combat this challenge, Lewa launched a feeding program in four primary schools, providing meals to over 1,000 students. We also extended this support to 13 additional schools during exam periods, ensuring that students could thrive in the classroom without the burden of hunger. The feeding program has not only improved school attendance and retention rates but has also contributed towards achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 2 and 4, ensuring both Zero Hunger and Quality Education. #Lewa #Community #Education #SDG2 #ZeroHunger
