Empowering entrepreneurs to change the world
About us
Somo is a non-profit organization that empowers micro and small social enterprises in East Africa's marginalized communities. Somo provides comprehensive business support, such as training, coaching, and financial access, to assist these businesses in becoming sustainable and scalable. Somo focuses on vulnerable women and youth from low-income communities, to stimulate economic growth, create job opportunities, and encourage social innovation within communities. Somo's strong track record of providing holistic entrepreneurship support and its deep understanding of marginalized entrepreneurs' realities make us an ideal partner. We invest in the ability of East Africans, who are typically excluded from economic opportunities and systems, to effect systemic change through social entrepreneurship, with a special emphasis on women and youth. Somo entrepreneurs can launch and scale social impact businesses with the right mentors and tools and access to financing and markets, allowing them to develop long-term solutions for economic growth and improved livelihoods while also transforming their communities. Supported end-to-end by our holistic, needs-based, and human-centred model, Somo entrepreneurs turn their skills and passion into real, lasting change for their communities.

I love everything data! I have been a big data enthusiast from a young University graduate, when I was first hired as a Business Writer. For my articles to pass the editorial board of the magazine, I had to crunch numbers and tell a coherent story of growth for businesses, big and small. Last week, in my capacity as a Director, I had the opportunity to sit with the amazing data team at Somo to understand our story of data, our data value chain and what the data tells about our work. As someone once said, ‘businesses that can grow, should be supported to grow’. Somo sits at the intersection of a desire for growth by small enterprises and their path to growth and scale. By targeting disadvantaged small enterprises in low-income areas in slums and remote rural areas, Somo unlocks critical barriers like technology, accredited production, finance and markets, enabling the enterprises to build resilience necessary for survival in developing and emerging economies. Since 2016, Somo has supported over 12,000 enterprises, financed over 750 and created over 18,000 jobs. Over 50% of Kenya's estimated 7.4 million MSMEs do not last for more than 3 years. As Yogi Berra once said, ‘’if you don’t know where you’re going, you might not get there’’, data shows us the path to success. In his article on ‘Building Better Boards’ published by Harvard Business Review’s ‘On Boards’ in 2020, David A. Nadler, writes that the key to better corporate governance lies in the working relationships between boards and managers, in the social dynamics of board interaction, and in the competence, integrity and constructive involvement of individual directors. He states further that Board directors must think aspirationally and act practically and find ways to stay engaged with the company’s issues outside of regular meetings. As a Director at Somo, I am keen to see how best we can harness and strengthen our data value chain to better highlight the barriers we’re unlocking for MSMEs and what the country needs to do to strengthen the ecosystem for SME growth, job creation and meaningful economic development. But why the interest in data? Writing about the ‘ladder of causation’ in ‘The Book of Why’, Judea Pearl tells about the central role that data plays in understanding causality. Data enables us to understand how best our solutions work, make good predictions and understand our path to long-term systemic change. At Somo, data tells us about the MSMEs and their needs, about the sectors they work and what they produce, about their markets, about their inventories and transaction history and about their credit portfolio. We’re able to draw patterns and trends about small enterprise performance, build cases for credit access, aggregate for markets, understand sector performance, cost of credit and make a stronger case for expanded financial inclusion and a supportive environment for small enterprises. Market linkage is crucial for entrepreneurs looking to scale. Growth isn’t just about increasing production—it’s about ensuring they have access to new markets that can support their expansion. Without the right connections, even the best business ideas can struggle to thrive. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to visit Somo Africa’s Kibra branch shop, and as a beneficiary of SOMO, I can confidently say that their dedication goes beyond just capacity building and resource support. They actively help entrepreneurs like me access markets, which is essential for sustainable growth. As we work to scale Xolani NatureGlow, I see the importance of building strong networks and tapping into new market opportunities—whether through gift shops, corporate gifting, or direct consumers. Scaling isn’t just about making more products; it’s about ensuring that every product has a ready market. Organizations like SOMO play a vital role in making that happen, and I’m grateful for the support that helps turn vision into reality. Special thanks to Amelia Hopkins Phillips and the entire Somo team. You can support us increase our market reach by visiting our online shop at https//:https://lnkd.in/gQnFJp2j

We’re excited to see Tabitha Achieng, founder of Afriset Tailors, featured in today’s Daily Nation! Tabitha is among the 62% of #SomoWomenInBusiness that Somo supports to drive sustainable change. Based in Adams Arcade, Kibera, Afriset Tailors transforms fabric waste into high-quality, African-inspired products, like backpacks, dolls, dresses, curtains, laptop bags, aprons, mittens, and more. 💡 Her inspiration? A shocking aha moment! “I bought a doll marketed as African-themed and gave it to my child, who was thrilled. Later, I unwrapped it and realized it was made from rags. That moment inspired me to start my business,” shares Ms. Achieng. With Somo's holistic support, including funding, Afriset Tailors acquired modern production machines, scaled operations and created more jobs in the community. What started as a small recycling effort is now a global business, exporting handmade home decor, dolls, and bags to the world. Don’t miss her incredible journey. Many micro, small, and medium #entrepreneurs struggle with access to technical skills, quality production methods, and business knowledge. Without these, they face difficulties scaling, maintaining product consistency, and competing in the market. These barriers don’t just affect individual #businesses, they hinder local economies and job creation. Last week in Mombasa, we got our hands (and maybe a few aprons) a little soapy during a two-day technical skills training 🧼 for entrepreneurs in the detergent industry! Led by our very own formulation guru, seth kyalo, the Product Development Lead from Tengeneza Na Somo, participants learned the secrets of crafting top-notch personal care and cleaning products. From silky lotions and fresh-smelling shampoos to powerful disinfectants and multipurpose soaps, we mixed, poured, and perfected it all! But that wasn’t all...🎓 We also celebrated 68 inspiring entrepreneurs graduating from two cohorts of our Q1 Boost Biz program! Through gamified learning, they tackled marketing and costing using the SYIB and SME Loop approaches, setting them up for serious success. It was a week full of learning, laughter, and lots of lather. With the right skills and resources, these #entrepreneurs can scale their #businesses, create #jobs, and strengthen their communities.

Team Spotlight: Rita Mwaniki – Somo Accountant! Hey everyone! Meet Rita Mwaniki, our amazing accountant who keeps Somo’s finances in check and ensures every shilling truly impacts the lives of marginalized #entrepreneurs. Why Somo? "I joined Somo in June 2023 because I was inspired by the mission of supporting #businesses in marginalized communities through funding, training, and mentorship. Empowering micro, small, and medium entrepreneurs with real opportunities just felt right!" Why accounting? "Crunching numbers might not be everyone’s idea of fun, but I love knowing that what I do contributes to real impact. Financial transparency and accountability might not be the coolest buzzwords, but trust me, they’re game-changers when it comes to making sure resources go where they’re needed most!" 💜 Rita’s take on International Women’s Day? “At Somo, we don’t just talk about supporting women entrepreneurs. We invest in them, train them, and walk the journey with them. Seeing women break barriers and grow #businesses that uplift entire communities is powerful! For me, this year's theme is about making sure every decision we make supports inclusion and impact. Because when women succeed, everyone wins, and that’s something worth celebrating not just this month, but every day!” 🎧 Fun fact about Rita Mwaniki? "I’m a podcast junkie! Always up for new ideas and perspectives. Drop your favorite recommendations!" #SomoTeamSpotlight #ForALLWomenAndGirls #IWD #SomoWomenInBusiness

What do mama mbogas, boda boda riders, and kiosk owners have in common? They’re the heartbeat of their communities, and we’ve had the absolute joy of working with them over the past month in Manyatta, Kisumu County, and Madzuu, Vihiga County! From growth mindset hacks to financial literacy, record-keeping, and goal setting, our training was all about real, practical skills to help these entrepreneurs build stronger, more sustainable businesses. But here’s the best part: we believe learning should be engaging and hands-on! So, we incorporated interactive exercises, real-world scenarios, and of course, plenty of laughs. And the results? 83 rockstar #entrepreneurs graduated, now armed with confidence, a deeper understanding of business documentation, and the tools to create lasting change in their communities. When small #businesses thrive, communities flourish. 💡💪 We’re beyond excited to continue this journey of impact! Thank you all for your ongoing support. We’re celebrating Kees Jan Koster, a seasoned developer, data scientist, and technical project manager who supported our tech team in February, bringing his expertise and problem-solving magic. His openness in sharing knowledge has sharpened our agility and made tackling challenges even smoother. But it wasn’t all code and troubleshooting! We bonded over great meals, hilarious stories, and even the shared struggle of internet downtimes. Asante sana, Kees Jan Koster! Karibu Kenya again. We look forward to more collaborations and hopefully fewer WiFi hiccups next time!😉
