From one region to another, birds rely on insects to fuel their long migratory journeys. But with pesticide use and habitat loss, these important partners are disappearing fast. This #WorldMigratoryBirdDay, join the #ProtectBirdsProtectInsects movement: https://lnkd.in/gZHFyBq

Being a girl shouldn’t determine what you can do, where you can go, or who you can become. Girls have the vision, courage, and determination to lead the charge against climate change and so many of them are pushing world leaders to take #ClimateAction & keep their promises. On this International Day of the Girl and every day, UNICEF is amplifying #GirlGoals & their voices for a sustainable future. https://lnkd.in/ggeFMPuN

Despite some progress, the pace of renewable energy adoption in developing countries must be stepped up to meet the 2030 targets. Although clean, reliable and affordable, solar and wind power, for example, still account for only a small share of total final energy consumption in low-income countries. This is attributed to factors such as inadequate infrastructure, financial constraints, and policy barriers. See UN Africa Renewal info on how these challenges can be overcome for the good of people and the planet: https://lnkd.in/dbrsMGhM

Breathing dirty air doesn’t just affect your lungs… it can also harm your mind. Research shows that high levels of fine inhalable particles (PM 2.5) could result in psychological and behavioural problems later in childhood, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety and depression. The most affected communities are in high-pollution areas, often low income, urban neighbourhoods. On #WorldMentalHealthDay learn more about the invisible crisis with real-life consequences. https://lnkd.in/duQ5yK8p

The climate crisis is already hitting every nation, with spiraling human and economic costs, and the planet is still heading for a dangerously high temperature rise of 2.7°C. The deadline is approaching for the 200 parties to the Paris Agreement to develop new national plans (NDCs 3.0) to counter the #ClimateCrisis. The plans must be aligned with a 1.5°C pathway and cover all greenhouse gases and sectors, including energy, agriculture, land use and forestry, transport, industry and waste. https://lnkd.in/eGdbCUqR

Shifting from the practice of slash-and-burn agriculture, here is an example of how farmers in the tropical rainforest of the Congo Basin are balancing forest conservation with agriculture through sustainable practices. These communities are partly driven by a national effort by the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the UN-REDD Programme that grants land concessions to forest-reliant communities, giving them a greater stake in efforts to combat deforestation, improve livelihoods and protect the rights of those who live beside the forests, including Indigenous Peoples. Countries across Africa are meeting this week to discuss the next round of National #ClimateAction Plans (NDCs) in which sustainable agriculture plays a key role: https://lnkd.in/deRuDznU

There are high hopes that artificial intelligence (AI) can help tackle some of the world’s biggest environmental emergencies. Among other things, the technology is already being used to map the destructive dredging of sand and chart emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Data centres housing AI servers consume vast amounts of electricity, water, and critical minerals, often mined unsustainably, while generating electronic waste. How can the world address the environmental fallout from AI? This article explains: https://lnkd.in/daJih9_H

Meet “Tropospheric Ozone,” one of the four major "super pollutants" that together account for approximately 45% of the climate impact to date. Formed by the interaction of sunlight with volatile organic compounds, it is a menace to everything with which it comes into contact. Humans, animals, plants, and crops, nothing is safe from its dire effects. The Climate & Clean Air Coalition explains how reducing tropospheric Ozone improves and saves lives while also fighting the #ClimateCrisis: https://lnkd.in/eb9bKykh
