Of the countries that already have, we’re seeing a troubling trend: a rising blend of misinformation, financial influence, and authoritarian tactics is chipping away at democratic values worldwide. It goes without saying that when election integrity is compromised, the cost is high—citizens lose trust, political participation wanes, and freedoms erode. But hope remains. From Senegal, where citizens upheld democratic norms, to Guatemala, where grassroots coalitions pushed for democratic recovery, these stories show that people-powered solutions can turn the tide. Cornell University’s latest insights delve into this year’s pivotal elections and the role of organized citizen action in sustaining democracy’s future. Here we are, in Dubai, members of the World Economic Forum’s Data Equity Council, at the forum’s annual Global Futures Council #GFC24 meeting, “where the world’s leading knowledge community meets to share insights on emerging trends and scenarios relating to key global issues.” #DataEquity is indeed a critical global issue and our team is leading and expanding the discussion with this just released #DataEquity framework. https://lnkd.in/epKe_n2n I assure you this is one of the most exciting #DataEquity frameworks you will ever explore. Thank you David and Jean-Louis, I enjoyed our conversation today. Thank you, Mary for moderating and NetHope for bringing us together. Let us include the voices of the vulnerable communities disproportionately affected by climate change as we design mitigation measures.
As the busy fall conference season continues, I’ve had the privilege of reconnecting with many partners and friends this week at NetHope's Global Summit (Erin Connor, Erin Baudo Felter). It’s exciting to see how discussions have evolved to focus on supporting those most affected by climate change—particularly communities that have contributed the least to global emissions. I am glad to see that the climate adaptation financing gap is also getting attention and how private philanthropy is recognizing its vital role in supporting innovation for nonprofits and advancements in climate adaptation—especially for digital solutions. We are starting to make strides towards the kind of bold climate action we need to support those most vulnerable. I also had the opportunity to have broader conversations about #techforgood and share how Mercy Corps harnesses technology to enhance our scale, efficiency, and program quality in addressing climate change and rising conflict on an executive panel with Carmen Correa, mark hetfield, and Lance Pierce. And we only mentioned AI twice ;) Mercy Corps recognizes that emerging technologies can transform climate adaptation and other vital solutions in the regions we serve. Our commitment to building community resilience and an inclusive future includes actively investing in digital and data services. Thanks, Mary de Wysocki for being a wonderful moderator of the conversation with Jean-Louis Ecochard and Declan Ottaro, and NetHope for bringing us together for this important convening. #NetHopeSummit2024 #NetHopeGlobalSummit #ClimateResilience

Here are a few notable remarks shared by Declan Ottaro, Director of Operations at Ushahidi, during yesterday's Digital for Climate Adaptation & Resilience #NetHopeGlobalSummit Plenary. "There is absolutely no substitute for local knowledge and lived experiences when it comes to understanding a community’s context. It's crucial to be on the ground to grasp the nuances, whether they involve language or cultural dynamics. This understanding shapes our approach to designing solutions, like the work we're doing in Uganda, where we are co-creating with communities to ensure that what we develop is truly relevant to their needs." Get ready! The virtual experience launches this Monday, and registration is open until October 28. Don’t miss your chance to dive into workshops, training sessions, tech demos, and more. As Mozambique awaits the official results from the October 9 elections, allegations of fraud and calls for protests highlight the urgent need for political accountability. The ruling party, Frelimo, is expected to be declared the winner, maintaining its long-standing grip on power since independence. In the lead-up to the elections, PLATAFORMA PARA MONITORIA DEMOCRÁTICA-DECIDE utilized technology to enhance transparency and inclusivity. In a first-time collaboration with Ushahidi, they empowered citizens to report incidents in real-time via WhatsApp and SMS, laying the groundwork for ongoing democratic engagement. This partnership addressed immediate concerns while paving the way for future accountability. Plataforma DECIDE is now focused on using this technology to track the fulfillment of campaign promises, promoting a new standard for political responsibility in Mozambique. This initiative highlights how community-driven efforts can drive significant change in governance. Explore the deployment here: https://lnkd.in/dbzQm7eg
