  • Conservation International (CI) was presently engaged in two panel discussions at the 2024 Cambodia Climate Change Summit (CCCS) on October 24-25, 2024. The first panel was focused on "Operationalizing Article 6: Challenges and Opportunities for Cambodia in Global Carbon Markets" by Mr. Anirudh Krishnan, CI's Senior Policy Manager. The second panel was on "Market and non-market mechanisms for conserving and restoring coastal blue carbon ecosystems" by Dr. Pimchanok Buapet, Technical Director of the International Blue Carbon Institute, Conservation International. CI Cambodia also supported Mrs. Mao Doeurn, an Indigenous People representative from the Mongri community of Pursat province in the Central Cardamom Mountains landscape, in attending a significant discussion on "Indigenous Peoples' Participation in Conservation and Implementation of the REDD Project." These two-day CCCS dialogues between all stakeholders are a significant demonstration of the necessity for the participation of all stakeholders and individuals in the solution to the climate change, as it is our shared responsibility. Thank you for having us ! #CCCS2024 #Carbon #REDD+ #IndigenousPeople #BlueCarbon #ClimateChangeMitigation #CoastalEcosystems #FaunaAndFlora #SustainableEconomy #Cambodia

  • Happy Gibbon Day ! In 2010, Conservation International researchers discovered the northern yellow-cheeked crested gibbon in Veun Tai-Siempang National Park, a new species to science. CI has since worked with Indigenous people and local communities to develop an ecotourism initiative which enables visitors to hear and see the gibbons in the wild. This project provides a sanctuary for the gibbons while creating sustainable income sources for local families through tourism. Gibbon Community-based Ecotourism is a nature lover's delight and the ideal location for anyone looking to see stunning natural environment. Please pay a visit to the CBET and Together let’s commit to protect Gibbon and their natural habitats! #CICambodia #Conservation #GibbonCBET #HabitatProtection #gibbonday2024 #gibbondays #primates #endangeredspecies #REDD #VSSP

  • The General Department of Local Communities of the Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with development partners and related stakeholders, organized the Consultation Workshop on "Community Protected Areas" on 21 and 22 October 2024, to which Conservation International Cambodia joined and contributed key insights. The purpose of this workshop is to review the current situation, progress, and direction of Community Protected Area (CPA) management, discuss mechanisms and policies to promote economic activities, improve the livelihoods of local communities, and set up data and mechanisms. In this workshop, Mr. Heng Sokrith, Senior Manager of CI Cambodia Tonle Sap Program, shared the results achieved in supporting and strengthening the capacity of local communities through the Mini Trust Fund to support the management of Community Fisheries (CFi) since 2014. The program kicked off with two CFIs and has now expanded to twelve. Through Mini Trust Fund, the community committee can collect interest every three months from the funds deposited in the bank or directly managed by the community to support the community management plan. The plan includes activities such as patrols, safeguarding community-protected areas, protecting flooded forests, and disseminating fishing laws to community members. Community members can borrow money at a reasonable interest rate to meet their needs and use it to improve their livelihood. However, all community members must abide by the conditions in the project, respecting the law on non-illegal fisheries and participating in nature protection. Other international organisations recognise The Mini Trust Fund as a successful model for supporting the management of fishing communities and are replicating it to support numerous community fisheries and CPAs in the Tonle Sap and Mekong Rivers. The Mini Trust Fund, an effective budget sustainability mechanism, has enabled CFi to assume responsibility and sustainably execute their community plan after the project's completion. #CICambodia #Conservation #minitrustfundund #Cfi #communityfisheries #tonlesaplake #localcommunities #fisheries #livelihood #CPA #CommunityProtectedArea

  • In September 2024, Conservation International Cambodia implemented an education outreach program in four communities and a school in the provinces of Koh Kong and Kampong Speu. The objective was to increase awareness of the importance of environmental protection, wildlife, and forest conservation among the students and the community. The program actively engaged and involved 131 participants, of whom 90 were women and girls. The team organised interactive activities, including a community nightshow and interactive learning, to raise awareness among students and communities regarding the significance of wildlife conservation and appropriate waste management in their communities. This outreach initiative is a part of the Central Cardamom Mountains Landscape program supported by USAID Morodok Baitang, the Legacy Landscapes Fund, and P&G. By increasing environmental awareness, fostering participation, and safeguarding nature, we could thrive harmoniously together. #ConservationEfforts #BiodiversityConservation #CICambodia #conservation #wildlife #biodiversity #Reddplus #REDD #centralcardamom #wildlifeprotection #environment #Outreach #education

  • #WorldFoodDay! Food ranks as the third most essential human requirement, following air and water. Nature acts as an essential provider, offering abundant food supplies for both human and animal consumption, long before the advent of the agricultural revolution. Conservation International Cambodia (CI Cambodia) actively engages in empowering local communities to sustainably use natural resources and promote sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices. In collaboration with relevant partners and with the support of the Royal Government of Cambodia, CI Cambodia has been actively working to conserve the environment and ensure sustainable food security in the Tonle Sap, the Central Cardamom Mountains Landscape, the Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Veun Sai-Siem Pang National Park, with the common, strategic goal of promoting a climate-resilient society where people could thrive with nature. #worldfoodday #worldfoodday2024 #cicambodia #Cambodia #nature #conservation #food #foodie #agriculture #WorldFoodDay #RightToFoodsForABetterLifeAndABetterFuture

  • On Friday, October 11, 2024, H.E. Dr. Ken Sereyrotha, Director General, General Directorate of Local Community and Carbon Credit Secretariat as well as REDD+ Taskforce Secreterat, Ministry of Environment (MoE), and Mr. Oum Sony, Conservation International Cambodia (CI Cambodia) Country Director, jointly signed an agreement to implement the Veun Sai-Siem Pang National Park (VSSP) Project Agreement. The delegates of the Ministry of Environment including the REDD+ Taskforce Secretariat, and the Carbon Crediting Secretariat, and Global Green Natura (GGN), attended the event, bringing together a total of 34 participants (5 women). The signing project agreement indicates the commitments in supporting protected area management, sustainable agriculture, and ecotourism and REDD+ development that ensure long-term benefits for people and nature in Vern Sai-Siem Pang National Park, locates at Ratanakiri, and Stung Treng provinces. Mr. Oum Sony, CI Cambodia Country Director said, "This is a crucial moment in which we must strengthen collaboration to promote sustainable development using market-based mechanisms, such as REDD+ development, in accordance with the safeguarding of nature. CI stands ready to support and carry out this significant mission in collaboration with all our partners. We are grateful to all stakeholders, including the Royal Government of Cambodia, the private sector, indigenous people, local communities, and development partners, for their trust and goodwill to foster relations in which humans and business can thrive with nature.”  With ongoing support from the Ministry of Environment and financial backing from the Arcus Foundation, the Mekong Regional Land Governance (MRLG) project, and GGN, CI Cambodia is expanding its efforts to conserve and restore the forest, enhance biodiversity protection, and improve local livelihoods. These initiatives focus on sustainable agriculture, land-use planning, and ecotourism development, ensuring long-term benefits for both people and wildlife in the region. Since 2009, CI has been actively working with the Ministry of Environment and partners in the VSSP National Park to conserve its unique biodiversity and promote sustainable development for the benefit of both nature and local communities.
