The 180-degree rule, also known as the axis of action, is a fundamental principle in filmmaking that governs the spatial relationships between characters and objects within a scene. It establishes an imaginary line, known as the action line or axis, along which the camera is positioned to maintain consistent spatial orientation and screen direction. According to the 180-degree rule, once the camera is positioned on one side of the action line, it should remain on that side throughout the scene to preserve spatial continuity and avoid disorienting the viewer. Crossing the line occurs when the camera moves to the opposite side of the action line, resulting in a reversal of screen direction that can confuse the audience about the spatial relationships between characters and their surroundings. A movie example of the 180-degree rule and crossing the line can be found in the film "The Social Network" (2010), directed by David Fincher. In one scene, during a conversation between Mark Zuckerberg (played by Jesse Eisenberg) and Eduardo Saverin (played by Andrew Garfield) in a Harvard dorm room, the camera establishes an action line between the two characters. As they converse, the camera consistently maintains its position on one side of the action line to ensure spatial continuity. If the camera were to cross the line during this scene, it would result in a sudden change in the characters' screen direction, potentially disorienting the viewer and disrupting the flow of the conversation.
