The University of Bridgeport is a private institution of higher learning in Bridgeport, Connecticut, by Long Island Sound. It was founded by a group of citizens as Junior College of Connecticut in 1927 and has expanded over the years to offer degree programs from the associate through the doctoral level. The student body, which consists of more than 5,000 students, is notable for its racial diversity. About a third of the undergraduates attend part-time, and more than a third are over the age of 25.
The university is made up of schools of arts and sciences, business, education, engineering, design, dental hygiene, and continuing and professional studies; colleges of international studies, chiropractic, and naturopathic medicine; and institutes of acupuncture, nutrition, and physician assistant studies. The university operates centers in Stamford and Waterbury to make classes accessible to a greater number of students. Intensive English courses are available for foreign students, and support services are provided for students needing extra help to succeed in higher education. Students can also study off-campus at nearby Fairfield and Sacred Heart universities.
Varsity sports teams compete in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). School colors are purple and white, and the official mascot is the Purple Knight.
