About
Razer Toaster is an electrical toaster announced by American gaming hardware manufacturer Razer. Started as a Facebook joke and reused by Razer as an April Fools joke in 2016, on April 29th, 2019, Razer officially announced that the product will be put in production.
History
Before September 13th, 2013, Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan responded to a fan inquiry about the possible release of Razer toaster, replying that the company "already made one".[1] On September 13th, 2013, Facebook user Mark Withers created a page "Give us the Razer Toaster",[2] also posting requests to create the product in comment sections to Min-Liang Tan's posts on social media. On September 13th, 2013, Min-Liang Tan responded to Mark Withers's post with a promise to give him a toaster should the page gain one million likes (screenshot shown below).[3]
In the following years, Razer Toaster became a popular in-joke in the Razer community,[4] with fans referencing the product in social media posts and making memes about the non-existent product.
Project BreadWinner
On April 1st, 2016, Razer announced Project Breadwinner as an April Fools joke for the year.[5]
This project was demanded by community and you won’t shut up about it. So now we want your hand in our toaster. Give us your feedback on what features the ultimate gaming toaster should have and shape what Project BreadWinner becomes.
On July 27th, 2017, tech blogger Linus Sebastian presented a mockup of Razer Toaster at LTX 2017 meet-up, uploading a video of the event to YouTube on August 19th. The video gained over 1.4 million views in two years.
Razer Tattoos
On March 10th, 2010, Give us the Razer Toaster group proposed to alter the conditions of the bet. In the proposition, the group asked to count each Razer Toaster tattoo as an equivalent of 100,000 likes. On the same day, Razer CEO Ming-Liang Tan accepted the offer.[6]
Through April 2019, a total of 12 Give us the Razer Toaster users submitted photographs showing their Razer Toaster tattoos.[7][8]
Official Razer Toaster Announcement
On April 28th, 2019, with a total of 44,000 likes and 12 Razer Toaster tattoos, Give us the Razer Toaster group have gathered an equivalent of 1,244,000 likes required for the bet. On April 29th, 2019, Razer CEO Ming-Liang Tan announced that the toaster will be created.[9]
On the same day, Give us the Razer Toaster posted a 10-minute video recapping the history of the bet.[10] The video gained over 104,000 views in four days.
