#ShipRecycling Market - Week 39 - KA BOOM! This week, despite the escalating tensions in the Middle East and the subsequent global concerns, the ship recycling market showed some signs of positive movement. India led the market with several bulker sales due to rising local steel prices, better access to financing, and stable demand. Bangladesh, though facing political instability and severe flooding, is starting to show signs of recovery after a difficult few months. In contrast, Pakistan continues to lag far behind its regional competitors. Meanwhile, Turkey reported an accident at a local yard. While the geopolitical tensions have not yet resulted in a surge of tonnage to recycling markets or drastic price increases, India’s improving conditions have stirred renewed optimism in the sector. The future of pricing trends across the entire market remains uncertain amidst the ongoing instability in the region. In 2023, recycled steel produced from Alang's ship recycling yards saved enough CO₂ emissions to equal turning off 2.9 billion LED bulbs for a year! By recycling steel from end-of-life ships, we are not only giving new life to valuable materials but also significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Producing steel from recycled materials uses less energy compared to making new steel from iron ore, leading to substantial CO₂ savings. #Alang #ShipRecycling #SteelRecycling #Sustainability #Decarbonization

#ShipRecycling Market - Week 38 - POWDER KEG! Global ship recycling markets are currently facing significant challenges due to fluctuating steel plate prices in India and Pakistan, driven by the recent 30% tariffs on imports from China and unstable currency rates, particularly in Bangladesh. Vessel offers have plummeted by over $90/ton since early 2023, with prices falling below $500/LDT, even for favored containers. While MSC's India-focused policy briefly increased tonnage at Alang, recyclers across the subcontinent remain hesitant due to ongoing economic instability. Shipowners are refraining from selling vessels at current low prices, and despite signs that the market may have bottomed out, uncertainty prevails. #ShipRecycling Market - Week 37 - AT WAR! The global ship recycling market is grappling with severe challenges as political tensions and economic instability mount. With escalating conflicts across the Middle East, Ukraine, and rising tensions in Asia, financial markets remain volatile, and this is impacting the recycling industry heading into Q4 2024. Local currencies in the Indian subcontinent and Turkey saw slight stabilization as the U.S. Dollar dipped, possibly due to anticipated interest rate reductions by the U.S. Federal Reserve. However, this was overshadowed by sharp declines in steel plate prices in India, Pakistan, and Turkey, which had been the primary drivers keeping recycling markets afloat. Recyclers in Gadani, Pakistan, remain non-competitive, while Bangladesh operates with unpredictable pricing. Meanwhile, Turkish steel prices have plummeted, undermining the fragile stability recyclers had relied on. The global availability of vessels for recycling is also severely limited, driven by the ongoing political and military crises around the world, which has left the market in limbo. With declining prices and uncertain fundamentals, many recyclers are choosing to pause and wait for stability before making any offers, leaving the ship recycling market at a near standstill.
