    When I joined CMA CGM in January 2021, my friends and family were surprised that I would leave the private practice. I told them that this in-house position, as one of the company’s new-building legal counsel, was my dream job. It was true then, and still is.   2021 was historical : under the unique and visionary vision of our CEO, we ordered so many vessels that I almost lost count of them (also, not allowed to disclose 🙂). Securing these transactions was an amazing, once in a lifetime challenge for me, a not-that-old practitioner. 3 years later, I got promoted and now I’m lucky enough to work on the financing of these same vessels.    I was supported all the way by top-notch and demanding managers, enthusiastic and trustworthy engineers, and incredibly qualified, bright finance teams. With a squad like this, you can only overachieve 💪🏾   Working among these individuals, with the sole ambition to get the job done properly creates loyal and respectful relationships that made me grow consciously, and boosted my career. For this, I’m forever grateful to them.   For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a lawyer. A special vibration deep inside, that mutes into the urge to defend your client no matter what : protect their interests, their assets, their business, make them safe financially, preserve their integrity and values. Try to obtain the best outcome, the best results, always. This is what I try to do for my company.    It was a long and humble way, with great milestones to rest joyfully before going back to the field, and some downs that always turned out to be valuable lessons.   And one day, (not so) just like that : I received a magical and unexpected phone call, from someone that I value dearly, namely Xavier Leclercq.     #MEPC82 is coming to an end after two weeks of intense negotiations on the mid-term measures to reduce #GHG emissions from #shipping. As a side event, Belgium 🇧🇪 hosted a presentation on the “World’s first oceangoing Ammonia Fuelled Ships”. Exmar, together with WinGD Ltd., presented how gas carriers using their ammonia cargo as fuel can contribute to the reduction of GHG as from 2026. The necessary steps are being taken at the International Maritime Organization to bring the regulatory framework in line with #MEPC ambitions and industry initiatives, with #MSC109 in December being the potential pivotal point, after which the use of ammonia cargo as fuel would be possible. In the meantime and with a first step taken at #CCC10 in September, Belgium together with interested parties, is working hard on the development of technical guidelines for the #safe use of #ammonia cargo as fuel.     One of our valuable clients, Pan Ocean Co., Ltd, recently announced that the 'POS SINGAPORE', the first public-private joint autonomous navigation demonstration vessel which has been built by HD Hyundai Mipo Co., Ltd. departed from the Busan Jaseongdae Pier. The 1,800 TEU-class midsize container ship, POS Singapore, is 165 meters long, 14 meters high, and capable of reaching speeds of up to 36 km/h. It operates with a crew of 22. Unlike typical container ships, it is equipped with two automatic identification systems, two radars, four high-performance cameras, and its own communication devices. It also features an intelligent navigation system that can detect objects suddenly appearing on its route and autonomously change direction, while tracking other vessels via satellite. Dubbed the "self-driving car of the sea," POS Singapore is Korea’s first autonomous container ship, with a development cost of 160 billion KRW. Its big data collection allows for real-time tracking of the ship's position and fuel consumption, helping to determine the optimal route. The POS Singapore embarked on its maiden voyage from Busan North Port and will operate on the Korea-Southeast Asia route for one year. Of the total 500 hours of navigation, it will apply autonomous operation for 30 minutes on the outbound journey and 30 minutes on the return, totaling about one hour. Although this is just the beginning, the plan is to gradually extend the autonomous navigation time after thorough testing of key technologies, such as intelligent navigation, engine automation, and cybersecurity. The government-private joint project team, led by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and Pan Ocean Co., Ltd, aims to use these demonstration results to contribute to the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) development of international standards for autonomous ships. https://lnkd.in/gnPGzeXr

    CLdN places order for 10 newbuild Container Carriers CLdN today confirmed the placement of an order for 10 newbuild load-on / load-off (LoLo) container vessels with delivery as from January 2027. The large order is a decisive step by CLdN in branching out into the LoLo segment with its own Container Carrier fleet.  The newbuild ships will have a cargo capacity of 1,100 TEU and will complement CLdN’s fleet of more than thirty roll-on / roll-off (RoRo) vessels. The new ships will have outstanding fuel efficiency and an innovative open-top design to allow reduced port handling times.  Earlier this year, CLdN introduced a successful LoLo offering on its Ireland service using chartered vessels operating from its recently acquired Distriport terminal in Rotterdam. This service recently expanded with the addition of a third weekly direct sailing between Rotterdam Distriport and Dublin. The expansion into the LoLo segment is highly complementary to CLdN’s short-sea RoRo services and provides excellent operational flexibility, quick turnaround times in port and optimal sailing frequency for customers. This short lead time and high frequency product is unique in the current short sea container market, which is currently dominated by deep sea feeder carriers offering longer lead times and less frequent services. The new vessels will be purposely built by HD Hyundai Mipo in Ulsan, South Korea. Hyundai is a long-term shipbuilding partner of CLdN and is currently completing the construction of two 8,000 lane meter G9e RoRo vessels which are scheduled for delivery to CLdN in the first half of 2025.  Commenting on the order, Florent Maes, CEO of CLdN said: “This order is an important step towards realising our longer-term growth ambitions and cementing CLdN’s position as a leader in the unaccompanied short-sea freight market in Europe. Our recent entry into the LoLo segment, facilitated by the acquisition of the Distriport terminal in Rotterdam earlier in the year, has been very well received by customers and is proving highly complementary to our RoRo services.”  #cldn #loloservice

    DNV has awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard for the design of a 60,000 cbm LPG/NH3/VCM carrier ship. The vessel concept has been developed to address the growing demand for medium gas carriers in the industry. However, it will feature a greater cargo capacity than typically seen on ships of its kind, making use of an innovative trunk deck configuration to increase available storage space. The AiP, which certifies that the design is feasible with no significant obstacles preventing it from being constructed, was awarded to the South Korean shipbuilder during the Gastech Exhibition and Conference in Houston this week.     Lloyd’s Register has awarded Approval in Principle to HD Hyundai Mipo Co., Ltd. for two projects, with ceremonies taking place at Gastech 2024 in Houston yesterday. The first is for a new 23,000cbm ammonia-fuelled ship design. The proposed vessel is 160m long, 25.5m wide and 16.7 m deep, with three type A cargo tanks and a forward deckhouse. It will be powered by two sets of Azimuth thrusters and is equipped with one set of bow thrusters. The second is for a 20,000 cbm LCO₂ carrier, following the successful completion of a joint development project between the parties. The vessel is notable for its optimised cargo tank arrangement, designed to enhance both technical and economic efficiency. These agreements signify both companies’ collective technical strengths and commitment to advancing energy transition technologies. The number of speakers and sessions at the Gastech Technical Conference has been truly astonishing. Over 1000 experts from around the world have taken part – on topics ranging from A (Ammonia) to T (Terminals). DNV’s own Richard Tao was in action today as part of the Carbon Dioxide Shipping session – one of the hottest topics in the maritime world. He presented a new case study on Liquified CO2 Shipping, which prompted a thoughtful discussion on the potential of this emerging sector. Any exhibition, but especially Gastech is all about the people – and at DNV we want to make sure our partners have the spotlight to celebrate their achievements.
