Jensen Hughes is featured in the #DailyHive! The online news site recently highlighted a report released by the government of #BritishColumbia on the feasibility of taller, single-staircase #multifamily #residential #buildings. The report, developed by Jensen Hughes with input from offices in several countries, detailed the findings of comparable practices around the world, along with suggested options that would allow for larger single-staircase structures. In the article, Ravi Kahlon, BC Minister of Housing, applauded Jensen Hughes for hearing different people’s concerns and providing solutions to address them. Robert (Bob) Heikkila, Kevin Chen and Biswadeep Ghosh contributed to the project. The options provided in the report will assist the BC government in making #buildingcode changes to enable low-rise, single-staircase residential buildings, which may be ready as early as Fall 2024. Read the article to find out more about the report and Jensen Hughes’ suggested options for these structures: https://lnkd.in/grzJG5Sd   #FireSafety #BuildingCodes #SingleEgressStairs #MultiFamilyBuildings #AffordableHousing

Larry Rietz, Global Service Line Leader for Detection + Alarm joins hundreds of public safety professionals next week at the National Carbon Monoxide Awareness Association Summit in Kansas City, Missouri. The data and incident awareness built into this event support life safety regulatory updates such as the 2024 International Codes and Standards update requiring all new buildings to have CO monitors installed, whereas previously it was a state-by-state provision for apartments, nursing homes, dormitories, schools, and entertainment venues. NCOAA has partnered with the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) this year by hosting their annual CO Safety Summit in tandem with the NASFM’s Annual Fire Prevention and Safety Symposium. These affiliated events bring together fire marshals, public safety experts and other industry professionals, survivors, and safety advocates to influence codes and standards, regulations, products, public awareness, and more. Jensen Hughes is proud to sponsor this event and join NCOAA’s civic-minded mission to end the public health crisis of carbon monoxide poisoning and support carbon monoxide poisoning survivors in recovering to live happy and healthy lives. Jensen Hughes experts Jonathan Hodges, PhD and Vernon Champlin are presenting "Artificial Intelligence for Fire Marshals" next week at the 34th Annual Fire Prevention & Safety Symposium in Kansas City, Missouri hosted by the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM). Running from July 31 to August 1, this symposium titled “Bringing it All Together,” embodies the NASFM mission by strategically partnering with the National Carbon Monoxide Awareness Association (NCOAA) and the International Fire Marshal Association (IFMA), a section of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA. Jonathan and Vernon will be exploring the potential of Artificial Intelligence in improving operational response and recovery, and community risk reduction for the fire service industry. The Symposium is an annual event that brings together Fire Marshals and public safety officials from across the country to develop code adoption and enforcement, fire and arson investigation, fire incident data collection and analysis, firefighter training and safety, as well as public education. This 🌲 Timber Tuesday 🌲 we are celebrating a new project in the Western US, a region with a reputation for tall trees and deep appreciation for the natural environment they stand in. In 2025, The Clackamas County Courthouse in #Oregon City, Oregon, will open in a new facility with design and construction elements that reflect the region’s focus on protecting and celebrating the natural world. The materials and systems within the courthouse were chosen with best practices for energy efficiency and #sustainability in #greenbuilding, including mass timber panels in the lobby. The original building was completed in 1936 and no longer serves the region’s growing population in size or compliance with safety measures. DLR Group designed a new six-story building for the county’s #civic plaza that meets #environmental, #accessibility and #security needs for the community while creating new jobs and business opportunities. Jensen Hughes was deeply involved with the project during the opportunity and competitive stages, influencing the approach by establishing applicable code criteria related to the owner's program requirements. Our team developed criteria for available #masstimber construction types, and key aspects of #building, #firedetection, #suppression, and #smokecontrol requirements, as well as special conditions for holding areas and #highrise building requirements. Are you looking for a cost-effective approach to addressing structural fire safety challenges in your construction projects? Structural fire engineering (SFE) offers a practical way to optimize fire protection while reducing dependence on conventional measures. Learn more from Mikko Salminen, Ph.D. in his recent article for Consulting-Specifying Engineer, where he discusses the applications and advantages of SFE. New and rapidly changing building trends have resulted in designers increasingly searching for alternatives to conventional structural fire protection approaches. SFE is a valuable method for determining the potential impact of a fire on a building’s structural elements while addressing the fire safety challenges related to new building products and designs. Incorporating SFE from the early design stages can help strike a balance between safety compliance and resource efficiency, leading to innovative, sustainable and cost-effective buildings. The Copa América soccer final at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, was supposed to be a celebration of a beautiful game. Instead, a cascade of security breaches and crowd control issues plunged the event into chaos. Security breakdowns like this should never happen, especially at major events. Daniel Walsh, Senior Director of Security Risk Management, discusses the importance of conducting thorough security risk assessments of major stadium events to appropriately identify the greatest threats and calculate the impacts of worst-case scenarios. A stadium-specific risk assessment will inform officials of the most critical vulnerabilities and help them overcome or diminish the gaps with suitable staffing deployments, security technology assets, physical barriers, mutual aid agreements, and updated security and emergency management plans. By thoroughly establishing the greatest risks and how to proactively address them, officials overseeing large-venue events can avoid disastrous breakdowns similar to the one we witnessed at Hard Rock Stadium. Are you interested in learning more about the joint inspections conducted by our Forensics team? Find out more in Senior Investigator Gareth Williams’ blog, where he discusses the details of joint inspections and how Jensen Hughes can offer support for these activities. Regardless of whom the investigator is representing, the objective of a joint inspection is for involved parties to come together to establish facts and ascertain the cause of the incident, such as a sequence of events or a fault mechanism that caused a fire or escape of water. Jensen Hughes investigators are typically asked to attend a joint inspection following a fire or escape of water investigation if an investigator has made recommendations in their report for one or more parties to be put on notice. They may also be instructed to attend a joint inspection when our client is representing a third party who may be considered liable by insurers or solicitors acting on behalf of the affected property owner. Our investigators possess extensive forensic investigation experience and comprehensive knowledge of our client’s needs during joint inspections. Combined-cycle power plants are currently gaining popularity as industries and utilities seek to meet growing electricity demands, reduce emissions and lower energy costs. Yet, they are also at risk for fire events and create special concerns for life safety. Jensen Hughes Senior Engineer Edward Simbles discusses how to assess and manage these fire risks using recommendations from the NFPA 850 Standard. Gas-fired turbine engines, coupled with the presence of extremely hot surfaces and the use of lubricating oils, pose a fire risk. If fire is not recognized and extinguished quickly, it can result in millions of dollars in damage, prolonged downtime and loss of productivity. The recommendations provided by NFPA 850 can help ensure effective fire protection systems and reduce the risk of fire/explosion in combined-cycle power plants, maximizing the safety of personnel, facilities and the community.
