KHNP HOT NEWS _ 2024.09.26 KHNP Successfully Implements Digital Twin of Korean MMIS for APR1400 - Simulation of all processes from power plant construction to operation – Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP; President & CEO Joo-ho Whang) successfully developed a digital twin of the Korean Man–Machine Interface System (MMIS) for the Advanced Power Reactor 1400 (APR1400) after four years of research (Apr. 2020–Sep. 2024). A digital twin is a convergence technology that creates a twin of a real object in virtual space and synchronizes real-world data to solve real-world problems. In particular, the MMIS digital twin is characterized by implementing the safety and non-safety system controllers of nuclear power plants identical to actual equipment through full virtualization, which is more advanced than existing object-based twins. Using this newly developed technology, it is possible to perform simulation of all processes from power plant construction to operation becomes possible. In the power plant construction phase, design verification can be performed, and in the operation phase, it can be of a great help in performing root cause analysis when events such as failures occur. For example, when utilizing MMIS digital twin, various scenarios possible in a power plant can be simulated to test various control systems, and problem-solving ability and maintenance efficiency can be improved through smart engineering functions, real-time monitoring of controllers, and data analysis functions. This Korean MMIS digital twin technology is expected to greatly contribute to the reliability and safety of nuclear power generation. On the 26th of September, KHNP completed the construction of its Innovative MMIS Center (IMC) at KHNP Central Research Institute, equipped with MMIS digital twin virtualization facilities.
