In light of the recent weather we've been experiencing, it has me thinking about solutions to these challenges. There's a simple equation that I learned a while ago that I think is relevant: More non-permeable (impervious) surfaces = more flooding I know, I know, it may seem very simple, but it cannot be overstated. Whenever a permeable surface i.e. grass, soil, planting beds etc. are removed, the stormwater runoff in that area increases exponentially and without proper drainage in place, flood events will continue to occur. In order to reduce the environmental impact of runoff events stormwater management strategies such as rain gardens, green roofs, permeable pavement and Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) have been adopted in many area with notable success. You ever wondered why some parking lots look like the image below? Well it's for that exact reason. Simple solutions such as Increasing the number of permeable surfaces, coupled with a solid SuDS plan would be a tremendous aid in combatting the challenge of stormwater runoff and flooding events.
