summer programmes
summer fishing with nets - seining
Highlights:
- Experience a moment as a traditional seine fisher
- Take a boat to see the traditional fishing huts
- Guaranteed smoked whitefish! Enjoy the fish, blueberry pie and coffee by an open fire while listening to the stories.
- Learn to gut your own catch.
- Enjoy a refreshing swim in the lake.
- Learn about the 500-year old history of hunting and fishing in the area.
Your day by Lake Jerisjärvi begins, when you arrive Jari's house. Take the short walk (50m) down to the water, where we shall take the boat to see the Keimiöniemi fishing huts. They are located only few minutes away. Your host, the master of story-telling, Jari, describes you the past and the present life by the lake and the fishing huts. Jari's family has lived by the lake in Keimiöniemi since the 1830s and fishing has always been a central part of life.
We shall return to Jari's private shore, where you will learn the traditional seine fishing. Now you can experience yourself how the family has lived and fished for centuries. The seine is taken to the lake on two boats and thrown into water. There is room for some extra "fishermen" on the boats and the rest can enjoy the majestic fell scenery from a rowing boar. You can also admire the scenery from the shore and sit by the warming fire.
The seine is slowly reeled to the shore and you will have a chance to guess the amount of caught fish. The fish is immediately gutted, a skill which you can also learn. While the fish is being smoked, you can go for a swim or pet the family's cat and the dog.
As soon as the whitefish have turned copper, it's time to enjoy the meal. Traditionally you eat the whitefish with you fingers. For the dessert you will enjoy coffee made by an open fire accompanied by fresh blueberry pie. Blueberries are handpicked by the family.

sustainable tourism
act responsibly, aim for sustainability
My name is Jari Rossi and I am your wilderness guide, chef, storyteller and fisherman. My family arrived in this region in the 1830s an back then, as well as now, the lake provided the livelihood for local families. My ancestors fished all-year around and I am still practicing the same traditional fishing methods as they did with summer and winter nets, rods and traps.
Sustainability has been the guiding factor all throughout my 30-year old career as a tourism entrepreneur. Though today full sustainability is difficult to achieve due to carbon-based fuel so widely still in use, we can still always aim for more sustainable lifestyles. Therefore, I think that sustainability is a process rather that an end-state, and our responsible behaviour is central to this. Here are some of the things we have done so far, as a business and as a family, to contribute towards sustainability.

Therefore, I think that sustainability is a process rather that an end-state, and our responsible behaviour is central to this. Here are some of the things we have done so far, as a business and as a family, to contribute towards sustainability.
intangible heritage
Our main programmes are based on intangible heritage of the region. This means that we are aiming to continue our local traditions and keep alive the heritage and culture of the region. This is done by, for example, using traditional fishing methods. We continue the local traditions by practicing winter fishing with nets, and seine fishing in summer. I fish many times a week anyway to provide for my family, so taking customers with me has been a natural extension to this. Local history is an inseparable part of the fishing programmes, and we are surrounded by very old fishing huts. Furthermore, I tell visitors about the diversity of the nature, how we should respect it and how we make efforts towards more sustainable lifestyle.
Our main programme is the the story-telling shaman. Shamanism has existed almost in all the regions of the northern hemisphere, where they have traditionally been healers and sources of wisdom. Shamans have also continued the intangible heritage through oral tradition and storytelling. My shaman character is based on this ancient storytelling heritage.

local food
We purchase everything as locally as possible. All the fish that is needed for dining is either caught on the spot or bought from the local fisherman, who lives by Lake Jerisjärvi. During summers, potatoes, garlic, and onions are homegrown in our garden and preserved in the cellar for winter. The vegetable garden is fertilised by using our own home-compost. We hunt the moose ourselves and the reindeer meat is bought locally. We have chickens so the eggs come straight from our backyard for the pies we bake, when possible. Wild mushrooms and the berries are self-picked in our local clean forests for the pies we bake for our guests. The coffee we use is UTZ-certified.
Please, note that I can prepare the meals according to customers' special diets and this is an area I wish to develop in the future.

Recycling and energy use
Our programme services are based on low energy-use. All electricity we use is 100% green (renewable energy) and the heating system in the house is based on geothermal energy.
We have very little food waste, because all the purchases are done according to your needs. The extra food is used by the family and the food waste is composted. All other waste (glass, bottles, paper etc.) is recycled accordingly.
The challenge in our sustainability efforts is related to out motorised vehicles such as our cars and snowmobiles. We aim to minimise their use as much as we can and renew them for more eco-friendly models as soon as we can.
Our customer groups are small and there is no huge traffic generated by it. As the business is run from our home, there is no commuting to work.
The hut where the storytelling takes place, is insulated well to minimise the use of firewood. We use led lights in the hut and some extra ceiling heating to burn less fire wood. Also all this is generated by green energy. The firewood we use comes from our own forest and as I am also a licensed wood cutter, I know how to thin out the forest sustainably. In the hut, we use our old family tableware from the 1960s and don't used disposable crockery and cutlery unless absolutely necessary. Even then, we use biodegradable and environmentally friendly brands.

Cooperation, quality & Equality
The high quality of my business services is generated by the combination of formal education and long working history. In addition, my activities are guided by certain values such as trustworthiness, transparency and reliability.
My company is part of the local tourism association Discover Muonio and an active partner in Visit Muonio 2025 -project, where the entire destination aims for more sustainable tourism together.
I have also obtained Quality 1000 -certificate (Laatutonni in Finnish), which means that I have developed a selection of tools to keep my services high in quality.
My closest business partners are located in Muonio, Levi and Rovaniemi. I also work with Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park and at the local community college, where I train future wilderness and fishing guides.
The quality of the programmes is also shown in the fact that my programmes are used by high-end customers and luxury tourists. However, I would like to emphasize that all my customers are equally important to me and all the programmes are always same to all my customers.
The business is reachable by wheelchair and the most of the programmes are suitable for people with different disabilities. Don't hesitate to ask for more questions! All programmes are private, which means that you may enjoy the day without any distractions. We respect your privacy!
Furthermore, my company has a valid health & safety plan which is required by the law and we go through any security related issues before, for example, we take the boat out. In addition, I'm trained in first aid.

and finally...
Officially the name of my business is Keimiön Koukkaus, but it is a mouthful for our foreign guests, which is why I tend to use Lapland Shaman instead. However, the name of my company means the following:
"Keimiö" refers to the small peninsula, where our family home is located and where the programmes take place. "Koukkaus" means roughly translated "a detour". Before my company was established in 1995, I was in the habit of making lots of detours with my friends and guests because I was so enthusiastic about showing them more and more things in our beautiful lake area. Hence the name Keimiön Koukkaus, Keimiö Detour.
In case you are travelling in the area, I would like to invite you to make a small detour to your travel plans, your own Keimiön Koukkus and visit us. Welcome to Lake Jerisjärvi!
