In dire times, we need good news: Karma is now collaborating with the Syria Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) to give 20 children with thalassemia access to comprehensive treatment at Elias Hraoui Hospital in Zahle. The project also includes an advocacy campaign for improved access for vulnerable children with thalassemia in Lebanon. We are grateful to the CFLI for giving us the chance for this important partnership. Who do we need blood? Our bodies constantly produce blood cells, ensuring that blood reaches our organs and supplies them with the oxygen and nutricients they need to function properly. Due to a genetic defect, the bodies of Thalassemia patients lack this vital function and cannot produce red blood cells. This is why people with thalassemia require blood transfusions as essential medical treatment to stay alive and maintain good health. However, the supply of blood to these bodies must be continous: since thalassemia patients cannot produce blood, they need a transfusion whenever their body has used up the previous blood unit. Moreover, It is crucial that our patients receive their transfusion on time to avoid medical complications and damage to vital organs.
