Why #Perseverance Matters: Our Chosen Theme for 2025 Year. Imagine Beirut in the late 19th century, a city alive with energy and hope, where people were just beginning to understand the #importance of law in shaping society. In this vibrant setting, SADER was born, founded by a humble, illiterate villager who dared to launch the first commercial bookstore with a big dream: to make #knowledge accessible and understandable to everyone. What began as a modest initiative soon grew into something far greater—a legacy carried through five generations and over 162 years. Our story is not about a company; it’s about the #people who made it what it is today. It’s about the founders who, despite limited resources, believed they could make a difference. They faced challenges that would have disheartened many—from political upheavals to financial struggles. Yet, they pressed on, driven by a deep conviction that their work was vital to society. This spirit of perseverance became the backbone of SADER. Each generation has carried forward such a spirit, building on the efforts and #sacrifices of those before them. When faced with wars, conflicts, and shifting landscapes, they responded with resilience and #innovation, ensuring the company remained relevant through even the most difficult times. “History teaches us one thing: #perseverance.” That’s what my father used to say when talking about his grandfather, and it's true. What does it take to keep a family business alive for five generations, even in the toughest times? In family businesses, our roots run deep, and the legacy of those before us continues to guide and inspire us. In difficult times, it’s easy to think about giving up—leaving the country, changing paths, or finding something easier. But this is exactly when we need to hold on the most. I often think about the struggles of my father, grandfather, and ancestors. Their resilience was built on family values, hard work, and unity. They didn’t just build businesses: for over a century and a half, they built legacies—starting from the ground up with passion and the belief that no challenge was too big to overcome. And here we are today, facing our own challenges. We must remember, these moments define us. Quitting has never been an option, not for them, and not for us. Family businesses are about more than profit. They’re about strengthening communities, and creating continuity. Every struggle adds another chapter to our story—one that future generations will look back on with pride. At SADER, our story is one of perseverance. My father, Joseph, led the way during Lebanon’s darkest times. Even during the civil war, he never gave up. He transformed SADER from a traditional legal publishing house into a digital pioneer. His vision and leadership carried us through the toughest periods in Lebanon’s history. Like his father and grandfather, who witnessed two world wars, he taught us that a family business isn’t just a company—it’s part of who you are. You don’t run away from it, even when times are tough. It’s a symbol of unity and shared purpose. It carries the weight of past struggles and the promise of future growth. Today, as SADER faces new challenges, we draw strength from our history. My forefathers constantly evolved but always stayed true to the values that built our foundation. Now, it’s our turn to continue that legacy, to stay resilient, and to keep moving forward. Some choose the easy path, working with big multinationals. Others look for stability. Then there are the entrepreneurs who take risks, knowing they might fail. All these paths are admirable. But for me, one of the hardest and most rewarding challenges is to preserve a family heritage that spans five generations, in an unpredictable world. And here’s what I believe most: the real success of a family business isn’t just measured by profits or size, but by how it withstands the test of time, adapts to change, and holds firm in the face of adversity. We owe it to our ancestors, our families, and ourselves to keep the flame alive—no matter the storm. And I promise to keep it alive. The event, hosted by Dr. Chady Saad PhD , Dean of the Faculty of Law, highlighted the university’s commitment to advancing legal education and fostering a deeper understanding of critical legal issues. Dr. Saad underscored the publication's significance, informed by Judge Elie Helou’s extensive experience in various criminal courts. Judge Helou, who meticulously edited and reviewed the #AnnotatedCode, emphasized the severe impact of drug-related issues on societal stability and called for a unified effort from families, legislators, and law enforcement to combat these challenges effectively. During the event, Dr. Nidal El Chaer, Ph.D, advisor at the Criminal Court in Mount Lebanon, discussed the court’s pivotal role in handling drug cases under Law 98/673 on Narcotics, Psychotropic Substances, and Precursors. He provided valuable insights into the current state of #CriminalCourts and their approaches to drug-related cases. Joseph Hawat, founder of the NGO JAD - Youth Against Drugs, highlighted the challenges faced by the anti-drug office, which operates with limited resources. He advocated for increased support and resources to enhance the office’s effectiveness in addressing the drug problem. Rany SADER راني صادر ’s speech paid tribute to Atty. Nagib Abdelnour whose perseverance and dedication over the past 28 years have been instrumental in the success of the "SADER Bain Al Tachrii wa Al ljtihad" series. Rany reflected on the series' inception, brought to life by three law students from La Sagesse University in 1996: Judge Rosy Sader , Atty. Nagib Abdelnour, and himself. The series has since become an essential reference for legal research. The roundtable discussion, expertly moderated by journalist Samir Youssef, brought the event to a compelling close, reinforcing the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing the complexities of #DrugsLaw. Behind the Glitz: Shocking Labor Practices Threaten the Shine of Dior the Luxurious Brands. Investigations in Milan have uncovered severe labor abuses in the supply chains of luxury brands such as Dior and Armani. These include exploitative conditions like low wages, excessive hours, unsafe environments, and the exploitation of migrant labor, all of which violate human rights and contradict the brands' ethical claims. Milan prosecutors are scrutinizing Dior, revealing illegal labor conditions at four suppliers, including long hours, lack of contracts, and the use of undocumented workers, with some paid as little as €53 for bags sold for €2,600. Similar conditions were found with Armani's suppliers, paying undocumented workers as low as €2 to €3 per hour. This scrutiny is part of a broader effort to address exploitation in the fashion industry, spurred by increasing calls for sustainability and ethical practices.
