Independent Collective School (ICS)
Primary and Secondary Education
Sri Lanka's first formal modern school. Project-based Learning for the AI future.
About us
ICS (Independent Collective School), the first formal alternative school in Sri Lanka. We are excited to be bringing a fresh and innovative approach to education for children aged 4 and above. Our mission is to provide a nurturing and inclusive environment that fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity, to empower our students to thrive in a fast changing world, while delivering a world class education, underpinned by Cambridge Curriculum and Assessments. We are dedicated to creating a space where children can explore their passions, develop essential skills, and cultivate a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom. An education that will serve them for their whole lives, from school to the workplace and beyond. As the first school of its kind in Sri Lanka, we are excited to be bringing forth a much needed educational revolution by creating a learning space that is truly child-centered and free of any kind of systemic oppression. We are bringing the power back to the student, to the parents, to the family and to the community. As a school, we strive to empower those in our students’ orbits, rather than seek to hold power ourselves. With our co-creative and collaborative principles, we aim to provide a holistic education that encompasses not only academic growth but also social, emotional and physical development for our students. Our dedicated and highly trained team of educators are passionate about creating an engaging and personalized learning experience that caters to the unique needs and interests of each child. Join us on this exciting journey as we embark on an educational revolution in Sri Lanka. Together, let's create an inspiring and transformative learning environment where every child can thrive and reach their full potential.

Yesterday I attended a workshop on "Disruptive Technolgy" conducted by Bandaranaike Academy For Leadership and Public Policy, where 3 experts, including Treasurex Melchior and Dr. Dishan Obeysinghe, from the fields of AI and Tech provided us with a very comprehensive programme exploring the global disruption that we are facing due to AI and Tech advancements. What made me want to scream was the fact that they quoted the following elements: 1) That 40% of jobs in Asia will be wiped out by 2027 (3 years away), including those of doctors, lawyers and accountants. 2) That education as we know it, O Level, A Level, Degree, Masters, PhD are defunct as they are all knowledge based systems of education and not skill based. That having degrees in a field will mean nothing. 3) That we should all be terrified and taking urgent action to mitigate these wide ranging risks, and working hard to look at the future beyond. For ourselves as well as our children. These were points made by the 3 experts. None of this is news to me. When are parents going to wake up and start DOING something to save their children's futures? We have kids going to school everyday all over the world, with heads full of ideas of becoming doctors, lawyers an going to get degrees, all ideas that the parents have provided. But none of that will safeguard them. They will be unqualified, unexperienced and unready to face the AI driven future. They will need to start again, from scratch. Aged 20 or 30. Having wasted their childhood opportunity to be ready, because parents didnt pay attention to what the head of the IMF calls the "AI Tsunami".
