Pioneer in Community Development in Sri Lanka
About us
Founded in 1958 by Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne, Sarvodaya has come a long way from its early beginnings in one rural village, growing, year after year, into Sri Lanka’s largest and most broadly embedded grassroots development network. The Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement is an unique people’s self-help organization inspired by the Gandhian ideals of truth, non-violence and service for all. Sarvodaya seeks no poverty and no affluence society in Sri Lanka through an integrated, holistic approach to development which includes spiritual, moral, cultural, social, economic and political development. Today, the Sarvodaya Movement has a proven history of exceptional accomplishments, a strong organizational structure, and a formidable outreach which encompasses more than 15,000 villages across all of Sri Lanka’s regions and ethnic groups. Incorporated by a Parliament Act No. 16 of 1972, Sarvodaya is supported by several specialist units such as Sarvodaya Women’s Movement, Sarvodaya Legal Services Movement, Sarvodaya Economic Enterprise Development Services and Sarvodaya Shanthi Sena (the Peace Brigades). In addition to 26 district offices Sarvodaya operates through 10 Development Education centers, 6 Multi-Purpose community Centers and 10 Sarvodaya Regional Resources Centers to serve more than 5,200 Community Based Organizations operates under the patronage of Sarvodaya across the country which are termed as ‘Sarvodaya Shramadana Societies’.

Sarvodaya, in collaboration with Children's Emergency Relief International (CERI), organized a discussion today at Sarvodaya Headquarters with several agencies involved in child protection and welfare to draft a proposal for all presidential candidates. The gathering highlighted the urgent needs of children and advocated for prioritizing child protection and welfare in government strategic plans. This initiative aimed to ensure that the voices of children were heard and their rights upheld. Both organizations emphasized that, while they held no political agenda, it was crucial to support elected officials in safeguarding the country's most valuable assets—its children. #ChildProtection #ChildWelfare #Sarvodaya #CERI #ChildrenFirst #ChildRights #SriLanka #FutureGenerations #PolicyChange #Advocacy

We’re building resilience in communities! But what does this even mean? Resilience is the ability of people, households, communities, countries, and systems to mitigate, adapt to, and recover from shocks and stresses such as natural disasters or economic crises. With support from USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance and together with Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement of Sri Lanka, we’re doing exactly this, supporting the most vulnerable, disaster-prone communities in 📍Badulla, Ratnapura and Colombo. Strengthening communities is essential to help them better cope with and recover from the impacts of climate change🍃 Swipe to learn more ➡️ #DRR #ClimateChange #RedAlert #BuildingResilience #SriLanka #LKA _______________________ The ‘Building Resilience Within Communities Project”, is funded by USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA), and implemented in 3 districts – Badulla, Rathnapura and Colombo. We were honoured to host H.E. Mizukoshi Hideaki, the Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, and his spouse, Mrs. Mizukoshi Mariko, at Sarvodaya Headquarters recently. During their visit, Ambassador Mizukoshi was welcomed at the Vishva Niketan International Peace & Meditation Centre, providing insight into the illustrious journey of late Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne. The delegation was introduced to the premises, museum, archives, and the spiritual programmes of Sarvodaya. The delegation visited the Sarvodaya Headquarters and praised Sarvodaya's consistent dedication to fostering social progress, a commitment that has benefited Sri Lankan communities uninterrupted for 65 years. Over the past four decades, former Japanese Ambassadors have graced Sarvodaya, solidifying Sarvodaya’s enduring partnership with the Japanese Government and the People of Japan.
