When it comes to promising AI use cases, should brands ask themselves whether they can do it 💪 … or whether they should do it? 👼 Brands increasingly face the challenge of balancing innovation with ethics amidst increasing regulatory scrutiny. For now, brands should explore self-regulation, writes Maghan McDowell. For instance, Tapestry set up an AI CoE to drive education, policies and values alignment; and HUGO BOSS introduced guidelines and a knowledge hub to ensure responsible AI use. Four major considerations include: 1️⃣ “Is it designed by AI”? The backlash on the COLLINA STRADA x BAGGU collab, where prints were created with the help of GenAI, demonstrates that consumers want to know when AI-generated content is used 2️⃣ “Is it a human or an avatar?” Similarly, Levi's® Footwear & Accessories and Lalaland.ai sparked debate for their AI models on the webshop. Companies like L'Oréal therefore decided to avoid AI-generated human imagery altogether 3️⃣ ”Internal-only or customer-facing AI?” Generally brands prefer in-house vs. customer-facing use cases, and LVMH decided to avoid the latter. Meanwhile Adore Me enables customers to co-create their own pieces through prompts 4️⃣ “Can AI be my new designer?” While Balmain, Coperni Paris and Nike have tested GenAI for creating styles, it remains crucial to know what sources are used. Norma Kamali shows an alternative: her AI models use only her designs AI's impact on fashion is undeniable, but it will be the ethical frameworks that brands adopt today that will determine tomorrow's successes. Kudos to leaders like Yang Lu Laetitia Raoust Ranjan Roy for shaping the industry’s path forward! 🪽 🔗 Vogue Business link in the comments #AI #FashionTech #Sustainability #GenerativeAI #Ethics #FashionInnovation #VogueBusiness #Luxury #MemesFriday

When AI meets over 57 years of fashion design legacy 🔥🔥🔥 Norma Kamali has always been ahead of her time. And now, she’s elevating her creativity by using AI to archive her impressive 57-year (yes, you heard that right!) body of work and create new designs based on her past creations. To introduce the newest member of her team, Kamali invited press, designers and other industry OGs to her Greenwich Street headquarters to demonstrate the technology, displaying results in fashion design and art installation entitled 'Fashion Hallucinations'. The designer demonstrated how #AI could generate new versions of her popular designs, like the black and sheer spliced dress worn by #JessicaBiel. Kamali emphasizes how AI is not only as a design tool but a way to protect her legacy for future generations, and aims to inspire other creatives to embrace AI to safeguard intellectual property and renew the fashion industry. 👉 What’s your take on using AI in creative fields? #NormaKamali #FashionInnovation #Innovation #AIFashion #FashionDesign #FashionTech #CreativeLegacy #DesignEfficiency #FashionForward #InspireCreativity 🔗 Link to article in the first comment

October 8 marks World Circular Textiles Day, an annual celebration of the growing movement toward circular textiles. But is the fashion industry embracing or resisting next-gen materials? On #WTCD, we reflect on the urgent need for a circular economy in textiles. While today highlights the importance of sustainable practices—from design and production to reuse and recycling—the fashion industry's shift to next-gen materials remains slow. The “Next Gen to This Gen: Scaling Material Innovations in the Fashion Sector” report, published earlier this year by Sustainabelle Advisory Services, Kering, and the Laudes Foundation, outlines key barriers: resistance to change 🙅, supply chain challenges 🚚, and the higher costs of new materials 💰. Despite growing interest, many brands are stuck in established systems, lacking the knowledge and investment to embrace sustainable alternatives. #Collaboration across brands, suppliers, and investors is critical to overcoming these challenges and achieving sustainability goals. What do you think - can the fashion industry overcome these hurdles? *** Join World Circular Textiles Day online later today! This year's theme is celebrating the NOW! - showcasing global innovations from the shop floor. 📅 Tue, 8 Oct 2024 18:00 - 19:30 CEST 🔗 Link in first comment Very excited for the panels: Rebecca Earley Tricia Carey Shelly Gottschamer Anurag Gupta Ina Budde Kate Goldsworthy Anna Pehrsson Robin Gnehm Worn Again Technologies Circle Economy University of the Arts London Accelerating Circularity USHA YARNS LIMITED TEXAID #WCTD2024 #NOW! #Sustainability #FashionInnovation #CircularEconomy

Kylie Jenner wasn’t the only one to positively surprise us this week, during Coperni Paris’s #PFW runway in Disneyland Paris… #California did too, with the Responsible Textile Recovery Act! 🌍 Following in the footsteps of similar legislation in France 🇫🇷 and The Netherlands 🇳🇱 , this groundbreaking bill addresses the staggering textile waste crisis, where over 17 million tons of waste are generated annually in the US, with a shocking 85% ending up in landfills. With this new law, fashion producers will be held accountable for their products' entire lifecycle. They must implement robust #recycling and #reuse programs, giving consumers access to convenient collection sites for their unwanted textiles—yes, even damaged pieces. This bold step forward transforms how we handle fashion waste, alleviating landfill pressures and promoting a circular economy where materials are reused and repurposed ♻️ At athena studio, we’re excited to see this shift but can’t help but wonder: are products really ready to be recycled? To make this law truly impactful, fashion pieces need to be designed for recyclability from the start. The good news? Our platform is here to help Californian fashion brands get ahead of the curve by integrating recyclability into their design process - let's work together to design fashion for the future! Climate Week in NYC is in full swing. Is our progress keeping pace? 🌍🌿 To quote Maxine Bédat: “Everyone is talking about all the progress that is being made. But the progress always seems to be marginally less bad (and most of it neutralized by growth).” This rings true as Textile Exchange drops its latest report, and reveals a major challenge: global fiber production soared to 124 million tonnes in 2023, with virgin synthetics leading the pack. Polyester alone accounted for 57% of all fibers, and recycled synthetics are struggling to gain ground due to lower virgin material costs and recycling tech limitations. Despite industry pledges, with less than 1% of the global fibers from recycled textiles, textile-to-textile recycling is still a far-off dream. On a slightly brighter note, sustainable cotton held steady at 29% despite a small dip in cotton production, while certified wool, mohair, and cashmere are gaining traction, with these fibers claiming up to 47% market share. But with fiber production projected to hit 160 million tonnes by 2030, the question remains—are we truly making progress on our sustainability targets? 📚 Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/e_8-iMB6 #MemesFriday #ClimateWeekNYC #ClimateWeek #NYC #MaterialsMarketReport #ClimateCrisis #TextileRevolution #FashionTech #CircularEconomy #SustainableFashion #Innovation
