The life settlement market has experienced notable growth over the past four years and statistics show it will continue to be a lucrative market for policyholders. Gen X has gained more of an understanding of their life insurance policies and the ability to sell them on the secondary market- a market that has broadened and opened up to many types of policies. Between 2019 and 2023, the market has shown steady increases in transaction volumes, with more than 3,000 life settlements completed in 2023 alone, funneling approximately $750 million to policyholders. This represents a substantial increase from previous years, driven by factors such as rising interest rates, the aging Baby Boomer population, and growing awareness among consumers and financial professionals about the benefits of life settlements. The face value of life insurance policies sold in the secondary market in 2023 reached $4 billion, reflecting the expanding role of life settlements as a liquidity option for seniors. Despite this growth, a significant portion of life insurance policies, valued at around $642 billion, still lapses or gets surrendered each year, indicating further potential for market expansion. Financial advisors should consider exploring a life settlement option for their clients now so they know if and when they qualify. It is a reputable tool that is beneficial for policyholders for many reasons.
