A great post from Rayna Lesser Hannaway, CFA who manages the small and mid companies strategy with our Partner Polen Capital. It certainly feels like deja vu for small and midcap managers these days yet, as she says, small caps outperformed for years after the tech bubble.
Today's small caps may seem limited... But Amazon once only sold books. Netflix only mailed DVDs. Microsoft only made programming languages. Apple only sold hobbyist computers. Tesla only made two-seater sports cars. What the market sees as limitations are often protective moats in disguise. The next great companies aren't being built in the spotlight. They're being built in the shadows, serving customers others ignore, solving problems others dismiss. Today's niche player might just be tomorrow's giant. I vividly remember in 2000 - the hallway conversations, investor meetings, client calls. Large cap concentration was extreme. Small caps had lagged for so long that capitulation was setting in. "Why should I ever own small caps again?" "The big just keep getting bigger." "Small caps are dead money." "Market dynamics have changed permanently." Sound familiar? But here's what happened after 2000: - Small caps outperformed for years following the tech bubble - Unknown companies like Amazon emerged from the wreckage - A small DVD-by-mail company called Netflix changed entertainment - Countless "limited" small caps became category leaders When everyone is asking "Why own small caps?" That's precisely when you should be asking "Why not?" #smallcapstocks #investing

The chart below really demonstrates how different Managed Futures are, even within the hedge fund universe. Using PivotalPath data, the chart created by our Partner DBi shows the correlation of hedge fund strategies to US stocks (horizontal axis) and bonds (vertical axis). You can see that most hedge fund strategies are positively correlated to stocks but with less volatility. So many are clustered in the bottom left-hand corner. Managed Futures aren't however. Positioned in the top right corner, this shows they have less correlation to both stocks and bonds making them very attractive for investors seeking diversification. The chart is also scaled by current assets under management. So you can see that Equity Diversified hedge funds have attracted the most funds whereas Managed Futures, a relatively new option, is still small. Andrew Beer, co-founder of DBi expects this gap to narrow as more investors recognize the benefits of having exposure to an asset that goes against the tide whatever stocks and bonds are doing. #Alternatives #HedgeFunds #CTAs #managedfutures
