As Genna Elvin from Tadaweb rightly concluded at today’s event at the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce: “Defence is coming big.” This week, I had the chance to attend two incredibly relevant gatherings that left no doubt—more capital, coordination, and strategic focus are heading toward defence and dual-use innovation. 🔹 Earlier in the week, a closed-door investor session hosted by GP Bullhound and the Luxembourg Future Fund unpacked Europe’s role in scaling sovereign tech. Topics ranged from unlocking IP to investment verticals such as AI, quantum, space tech, and semiconductors. 📊 One stat that stood out: 𝟰𝟰% 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗴𝗼 𝘂𝗻𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱—a reminder of the innovation gap SMEs can help close. 🔹 Today, Luxinnovation GIE and LPEA - Luxembourg Private Equity & Venture Capital Association brought together policymakers, investors, and founders for a packed session at the Chambre of Commerce. It was a powerful gathering of policymakers, founders, fund managers, and public actors like the EIF, NIF and EDA. The topic: how Luxembourg and Europe can (and must) position themselves at the crossroads of tech, defence, and deep innovation. Some key takeaways: 💶 €1.5B in EU funding is earmarked until 2027 for defence tech and dual-use innovation. 🛰️ Thematic calls, hackathons, accelerators, and matchmaking programs are scaling up fast - 8 in EU/Norway between 9-11 May 📌 EIF alone expects €127M in defence fund commitments by 2026, with more capital underway as this first mandate is only seen as a pilot. 🔍 Investors are looking at dual-use verticals—AI, microelectronics, space, energy storage—not just as optional innovation lanes, but as strategic necessities. 📅 EDF 2025 Work Programme opens in February with €1B+ across 33 topics and EDF Info Days and Matchmaking will be held in Brussels next week 2-3 April.
