Today at #ClimateWeekNYC, SustainCERT and Verra announced the signing of a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to accelerate credible corporate Scope 3 action. Reducing Scope 3 emissions, which often represent the majority of a company’s emissions, is critical. However, key challenges prevent corporates from taking action at scale. These challenges include a lack of clarity around the regulatory landscape and limited commercial incentives to invest in value chain decarbonization. Under the MOU, the partners will collaborate to overcome barriers to scale credible corporate Scope 3 action. Specifically, Verra and SustainCERT aim to collaborate on the following: - Standardizing terminology and definitions in the space and providing clarity for corporates to take action - Working on communications to build momentum and trust for credible Scope 3 climate action - Creating an interface between Verra’s Registry and SustainCERT’s VIVID Platform and unlocking inventory claims in line with international standards The new collaboration was announced today at the #NYCW Event "The Future of Scope 3: The Role of Value Chain Interventions and EACs with Upcoming Standards and Regulatory Changes", hosted by the Value Change Initiative. “It’s clear that despite the best intentions of many businesses, the global framework to incentivize action is not up to the task. Companies need clearer guidance, meaningful regulations, and help in making the business case for a drastic reduction in emissions." Marion said. ✳ What is Agriculture Resilience, why does it make business sense and how do we push boundaries in this space? That's what we discussed at the Regrow Ag Agriculture Resilience Summit. It was refreshing to share learnings and engage in genuine, thought-provoking discussions. Two critical topics stood out for me: ➡ Financing: To move beyond pilots we need to unlock sizeable financial commitments from across the value chain. The good news is that we have solutions to reduce the burden on everyone and enable cost sharing via co-claiming. The bad news is that no-one is doing this at scale yet. We really need to unpack what's holding back cost-sharing and co-claiming to scale action. ➡ Standards' alignment (or not?): Current requirements for what can be claimed are creating stranded assets i.e. situations where a large share of the impacts created by corporates cannot be claimed towards their scope 3 goals for reasons due to allocation or traceability requirements. Unless more flexibility is allowed, we will see more and more players reconsider their commitment to align with standards. Meet Guillaume Boinnard, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Specialist 🌱 Guillaume has been at SustainCERT for over 2 years and plays a key role in supporting sales, conducting research and development, and leading client delivery efforts. His technical knowledge helps clients navigate complex sustainability challenges, from GHG Protocol and SBTi compliance to impact simulations. We had a chat with him to find out more about what projects he's working on and why he chose to work in sustainability. 🏔️ Originating from the beautiful town of Seytroux, France, Guillaume’s passion for sustainability stems from witnessing the environmental changes in his region. His connection to nature motivates his work in ensuring value chains are both sustainable and resilient. 📋 Recent projects include impactful collaborations with large-scale food & agriculture companies, where he helped clients turn data into actionable sustainability strategies. To scale supply chain decarbonization, companies across the value chain need to share the benefits and the costs of emission reducing interventions 🌾 Our latest blog introduces how Impact Units, representing emission reductions or removals, can be used to claim verified Scope 3 emission reductions and transfer mitigation outcomes with value chain partners. Following these steps allows you to use Impact Units for co-investments and co-claiming: 1. Implement an intervention to reduce or remove emissions 2. Verify mitigation outcomes 3. Issue Impact Units and ensure attribution to the value chain 4. Transfer Impact Units to your partners 5. Assess the claims of each collaborating company 6. Report in a Scope 3 inventory 🚜 Impact Units mitigate common challenges affiliated with Scope 3 emission accounting, such as free riding, double counting and over-claiming, by ensuring fair allocation of impacts across investing value chain partners.
