  • 🔔 By a symbolic publicly attended demolition of the entry control point of the former steel plant "Liepajas Metalurgs", on 23 September, construction of the Liepaja Industrial Park began in order to transform the former steel plant territory into a modern, green industrial park, as formerly initiated and planned by the Liepaja Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Authority. The first phase construction works include building of 3 new street sections, the engineering communications (water supply, heat supply, rainwater drainage systems etc.) and complete renovation of the power grid. Implementation of the intended construction projects will undoubtedly facilitate attraction of investments for further development of new manufacturing facilities on the site. Before construction of the streets can begin, the site must be cleared of some existing structures and buildings. Efficient demolition sets the stage for a clean, workable site, allowing construction to proceed without delay. ✅Mayor of Liepaja Gunars Ansins: "By demolishing the entry control point of the long-time bankrupt steel plant, we are symbolically turning over a new page in Liepaja's industrial history. I hope that in a few years this site will be one of the most powerful green industrial parks in Latvia with strong industrial companies providing new jobs and boosting the economic growth of the city, the region and the entire country." ✅The Liepaja SEZ CEO Uldis Hmielevskis added: "This is just the beginning, the first step - building new streets, pedestrian and bicycle paths in the territory of the former steel plant "Liepajas Metalurgs" will make the former closed territory open and publicly accessible. Moreover, it is of vital importance to make the site attractive to investors who will then create modern manufacturing companies with well-paid smart technologies-based jobs and operating by basic principles of the circular economy, corresponding to the prerequisites of the European Green Deal." 📌The project "Infrastructure Development of the Liepaja Industrial Park, Round 1" is being implemented by using the funding of the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism in the amount of 10 million euros and is about to be completed by 31 December 2025. 👉More at: https://lnkd.in/dmJdQDh3

  • As part of the trade mission organized by the Ministry of Economics of Latvia and Investment and Development Agency of Latvia in the United States on September 16, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the US company "KBR" and the Liepaja Special Economic Zone company “GI Terminal” to accelerate decarbonization through production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and the development a CO2 transport, liquefaction and export terminal in Liepaja. Under the terms of the MoU, KBR will offer technology licensing, proprietary engineering design, proprietary equipment, and catalyst support for the development of a new SAF production unit with an expected capacity of up to 100 kilotons per year. The partnership will also include consulting and engineering services for the development of a CO2 liquefaction terminal, enabling the capture and safe transport of CO2 from industrial sources. Uldis Hmielevskis, CEO of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone, admits, that this SAF production initiative perfectly fits among several other large scale private investment projects to be implemented in territory of Liepaja SEZ in next five to seven years. Land reservation contracts have been signed both for construction of Offshore Wind Park support base and a Heavy Load Cargo terminal, as well as a hydrogen plant and a CO2 export terminal. These projects will attract significant investments, ensure presence of sustainable resources of H2, O2, CO2 and waste heat in large volumes and provide possibilities for other manufacturers from different industries.
