Endeavor Catalyst is the rules-based, co-investment fund of Endeavor, set up to invest exclusively in Endeavor Entrepreneur-led companies and to sustain Endeavor’s long-term operations in a mission-aligned way. Out of its 315+ investments worldwide, Endeavor Catalyst has invested in 26 companies in Africa, including three leading Moroccan companies. 🚀 The B2B e-commerce startup Chari | YC S21 | Ecom and Fintech apps for retailers in Francophone Africa secured a $1 million investment from Endeavor Catalyst in 2022, marking the first Moroccan startup to receive funding from the organization. This investment was part of Chari's Series A round, aimed at strengthening the company's continental expansion and its transition into fintech. 🚀 ZEDEDA, the leader in management and orchestration for edge computing, announced a $72 million growth capital round in 2023, with the Series C led by Smith Point Capital and participation from Endeavor Catalyst to accelerate global expansion. 🚀 The groundbreaking platform RemotePass announced a Series A investment round of $5.5 million in 2023, led by 212 Ventures, with participation from Endeavor Catalyst to empower remote workers worldwide. There has been a global shift in venture capital, moving from 80% of VC money going to the US 20 years ago to more than 50% of VC-funded companies now being outside the US. In a recent conversation with TechCrunch, Linda Rottenberg, Co-founder & CEO of Endeavor, discussed how local investors can step up their game, why patient and long-term capital needs to be prioritized in emerging ecosystems, and the role of Endeavor and its co-investment arm in this process. The conversation highlighted: 🌍 Emerging markets in Europe, Latin America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa are now significant players in the global VC landscape. 🦄 Endeavor’s Approach in achieving over 300 investments, mostly outside the US, with one in six companies in its portfolio being a unicorn. This achievement is attributed to : 1️⃣ A focus on long-term, patient capital 2️⃣ Being entrepreneur-first by supporting founders through tough times, including economic devaluations 3️⃣ Combining local presence with global insights and pattern recognition 👀 Of the 40 countries Endeavor operates in, Nigeria, Egypt, and Vietnam are the most exciting for the next 5 to 10 years. Ismael, who transitioned from a successful career in strategy consulting to founding multiple startups, shared his inspiring journey and insights on entrepreneurship, challenges, and the future of e-commerce in Africa. Here are some of the key points from the interview with Today Africa: 1️⃣ Inspired by the local grocery shops in Morocco, Chari intended to digitize these independent retailers to help them compete with larger supermarket chains by providing mobile apps to improve their daily operations and make them more competitive. 2️⃣ Ismael's experience in logistics and marketplace management from his previous startups, VotreChauffeur.ma, and Sarouty.ma, has been instrumental in Chari’s operations. 3️⃣ Trust is built by meeting shopkeepers in person, delivering goods on time, and ensuring competitive prices. 4️⃣ Passion and deep understanding of the local market have helped Ismael secure funding for Chari, enabling its expansion into Francophone countries in Africa for its fintech vertical. 5️⃣ B2B e-commerce is more sustainable in Africa due to infrastructure challenges faced by B2C models.
