Rejuvenating Communities & Ecosystems
نبذة عنا
WOTR tackles the key causes of rural poverty by taking a holistic approach to rejuvenate rural communities and the ecosystems in which they live. The focus is on mobilising rural people and building their capacities to efficiently manage the land, water, and forests that surround them. Working at the grassroots, WOTR creates resilient rural communities that enjoy a fulfilling life within vibrant and sustainable ecosystems. By using an integrated Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) approach; we regenerate degraded ecosystems to help rural communities adapt to climate change while expanding livelihood opportunities, improving health, nutrition and people’s well-being. Our interventions are enabled through Implementation, Applied Research and Training & Capacity Building across thematic areas that include 🍃Agriculture 🍃Women Empowerment 🍃Water & Land Management 🍃Livelihoods 🍃Health, Sanitation & Nutrition Headquartered in Pune, we have worked in 10 states in 7,124 villages and impacted 6.93 million people. WOTR grew out of the highly acclaimed Indo-German Watershed Development Project (IGWDP) that was started in 1989 by Father Hermann Bacher who is known as the Father of Watershed Development movement in Maharashtra, India. Father Hermann Bacher and Crispino Lobo founded Watershed Organisation Trust on 20th December 1993 with a vision of supporting and motivating individuals and communities to undertake integrated ecosystems development for enhanced well-being in India.

𝟒 𝐎𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐚 𝐅𝐏𝐎𝐬 𝐀𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 ₹𝟏.𝟒 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐘𝟐𝟒 👩🌾🌾 Four Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) in Odisha's Gajapati and Ganjam districts have reported a combined turnover of ₹1.4 crores for FY24. This achievement, announced at their recent Annual General Meeting, highlights the success of the Government of India's initiative to promote FPOs. Established in 2021 with support from WOTR and NABARD, these FPOs have significantly improved farmers' access to affordable inputs and markets. "Farmers now benefit from subsidised seeds, fertilisers, and equipment, leading to increased income and economic stability," shared Mr. B. Sundar Rao, a director at one of the FPOs. The Annual General Meeting was followed by a Farmer Awareness Programme, which addressed vital issues such as financial inclusion, credit linkages, convergence with government schemes, and the empowerment of women farmers, ensuring a holistic approach to sustainable agricultural development.🌾 The success story of these FPOs demonstrates the power of community-driven agricultural transformation, paving the way for sustainable rural development in Odisha. 𝟐 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝: 𝐕𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐎𝐥𝐝 𝐏𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐚𝐣𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 🌊 Sareri, a remote village located on the southern fringes of Aravallis is home to Rajasthan's Bhil tribal community. Here, basic amenities are scarce. Its rugged terrain, barren hills and lack of a perennial water source, make life more challenging. Compounded with heat stress, erratic rainfall and limited irrigation, most villagers rely solely on rainfed agriculture. When the rains stop, many must migrate for work. Earlier this year, the Life Insurance Company Housing Finance Limited (LICHFL) in partnership with WOTR began working in this region. When WOTR first approached the communities in Sareri, they only had one wish– solve the problem of water shortage. Under LICHFL’s Sujalam project, a Gram Vikas Samiti (Village Development Committee) was formed and the community members prioritised desilting an old pond. This effort created an additional water storage capacity of approx. 2 million litres. Furthermore, the fertile silt extracted during the work was repurposed by some farmers to level their fields.🌱 This initiative is part of a broader mission to increase irrigation coverage by 20-30% and improve crop productivity by 10-15% across 10 villages in Udaipur district within one year. Sareri's journey, with community-led solutions at its core, reflects a commitment to resilience, self-sufficiency, and sustainable development. Increased water-storage capacity is only the start. Facing unpredictable rainfall, high input costs, and over reliance on chemical fertilisers, Kashinath needed a sustainable solution. His involvement in the Climate Change Adaptation Through Water Harvesting and Climate Resilient Agriculture programme, supported by Eaton India Foundation and facilitated by WOTR, opened new doors. Since 2022, with training and support from the Village Development Committee (VDC), Kashinath has embraced vermicomposting. In just one year, he’s produced over 100 tons of organic compost, enhancing his crop yield and generating ₹300,000 in additional income – a 250% boost in his annual earnings. Kashinath and other farmers are also embracing soil and water conservation, along with other sustainable agriculture practices. 🧑🌾 Across five villages in Parner block – Padali, Jamgaon, Kalkup, Malkup, and Bhandgaon, the three-year programme is enabling over 670 small and marginal farmers, women, and youth to build response capacities, water-harvesting structures, and diversify income sources. In just the past six months, community-led efforts have increased water storage capacity by 6 million liters through the desilting of Earthen Nala Bunds (ENBs). 🌊 Together, these participatory efforts are building adaptive capacity, enhancing quality of life, and addressing rural poverty at its roots. Beyond Food and Water: Unveiling the Hidden Power of Provisioning Ecosystem Services 🌱 The WOTR Centre for Resilience Studies (W-CReS) suggests in its latest blog that Provisioning Ecosystem Services (PES) underpin 14 out of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), many of which are crucial for climate change adaptation among rural and indigenous communities. PES are the tangible benefits we derive from nature, such as food, water, genetic resources, and raw materials. These services are essential for livelihoods, food and nutritional security, and overall well-being of rural and indigenous communities, especially in developing countries. However, PES offer much more than just material benefits —they are also vital for climate change adaptation and resilience. As a key component of Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) strategies, these tangible ecosystem services support sustainable livelihoods while enhancing the ecosystem’s adaptability to climate change. 🌍 Learn more about the interconnectedness of the PES and SDGs, and explore WOTR’s EbA approach to building resilience.
