Fans Think They've Figured Out Giancarlo Esposito's Role in Captain America

Esposito joined the MCU in May.

Earlier today, Marvel Studios released the first trailer for Captain America: Brave New World. We saw glimpses of Harrison Ford's Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (and Red Hulk, too), Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres / Falcon, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, and Anthony Mackie as the titular character. More interestingly, actor Giancarlo Esposito can be shown in the trailer, with some speculating that the trailer revealed the actor's heavily speculated role in the MCU.

Spotted by Polygon, fans speculate that Esposito is playing the role of George Washington (G.W.) Bridge. In the comics, Bridge is a former gunman who is an agent for SHIELD. Those caught up with the MCU films know that SHIELD does not really exist in the universe right now after its disbandment, as depicted in the events of Captain America: The Winter Solider.

News of Esposito joining the MCU first surfaced in May after years of speculation. However, both Marvel and Esposito have remained tight-lipped as to what role the actor would play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Esposito did tease that his role would be revealed "sooner rather than later," adding that it would be "better than you can imagine." With San Diego Comic-Con coming up, hopefully, we will get more information then.

Captain America: Brave New World will be released in theatres on February 14, 2025. For more information on the characters set to appear in the film, check out our explainer on Red Hulk.
