🐟 Today, our AquaBioTech Group fisheries experts Justin Galea and Francisco Mascareño Suarez, along with molecular biologist Dr Marina M., conducted sampling of Maltese seabream as part of the FishEUTrust Project. This initiative involves sending samples to partners in Italy and Slovenia for advanced microbiome and stable isotope analysis. 🧪 These will validate previous findings and support the development of cutting-edge tools for analysing genetic information in seafood, with aim to identify the fish's origin, determine whether it was wild-caught or farmed, and improve food safety and traceability, ultimately reinforcing consumer trust in seafood products. We're proud to contribute to a more transparent and sustainable seafood industry! #SeafoodScience #Traceability #ConsumerTrust #AquacultureInnovation

  • ✈️ AquaBioTech Group's Head of R&D&I, Simona Paolacci, participated in the European Commission-organised workshop “𝑭𝑶𝑶𝑫 2030 𝑨𝑵𝑫 𝑩𝑬𝒀𝑶𝑵𝑫 – 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆, 𝑺𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑭𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝑺𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒔” held in Brussels, last Thursday 6th of March. The event was attended by a group of experts specialised in many aspects of food production and food security. The aim was to mobilise collective intelligence to shape the EU research agenda for food beyond 2030.  We were very honoured to be invited to contribute to this discussion. 🐟 𝘈𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘧𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘣𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘷𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘧𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘧𝘰𝘰𝘥, 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘦𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘺𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴. 🔍 𝐃𝐫 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐢 and her research team are focusing on precision aquaculture to improve aquafeeds efficiency. The team is also developing and testing novel aquafeeds containing sustainable sources of protein and lipids. This is important to reduce carbon emissions associated with aquaculture, but also to make Europe more independent for protein supply. • 💪 We are very proud to share our new article about management of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna by-products in Malta, that has just been accepted for publication on Journal of Cleaner Production 📖 https://lnkd.in/eS8gmKz7 📖 We analysed the biomass quality and the preservation state of tuna head and liver during the 6-8 hours following the tuna filleting. The biomass showed a very good preservation state and a high content of protein. The fatty acid profile was also very good. We carried out the 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐂𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 to have an estimation of the environmental impact of the utilisation of these by-products to produce fish meal and fish oil and we concluded that the processing of tuna by-products in Malta is a sustainable alternative to traditional disposal methods and their quality is high enough to be used as a source of proteins and lipids, not only in pet food, but also in farmed-animals feed. The study was conducted by AquaBioTech Group’s team Simona Paolacci , Giovanni Marco Cusimano, Clara Revue and Jui-Che (Rex) Chiang, who collaborated with partners of the project PROFIUS Project based in Italy, Denmark, Norway and Iceland. The project was funded by BlueBio Cofund cofound and Xjenza Malta. #SustainableAquaculture #CircularEconomy #OpenAccess
