Empowering Future Ocean Leaders
About us
The International Ocean Institute (IOI) is a world leading independent, non-governmental non-profit organisation conducting training and capacity building in Ocean Governance with the aim of creating knowledgeable future leaders. IOI trains young and mid-career practitioners in contemporary approaches to coastal and ocean management, with an emphasis on the moral, ethical and legal values in Ocean Governance (equity and peaceful uses of the ocean). In 1972, the IOI was founded by Professor Elisabeth Mann Borgese and its establishment was a milestone in the struggle to promote the concept of Pacem in Maribus (peace in the oceans) and the conservation of the ocean and its resources so that future generations can share in their benefits. The IOI enjoys special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and consultative status at some of UN’s Specialized Agencies, and works to uphold and expand the principle of the common heritage as defined in the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea. The mission of the IOI is to ensure the sustainability of the oceans as the “source of life”, and to uphold and expand the principle of the common heritage of mankind as enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The IOI Ocean Academy global programme has been endorsed by the IOC Executive Secretary as a Decade Action “No 65.6. IOI Ocean Academy - Ocean Knowledge for All” as a project forming part of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030, attached to the Decade programme No. UN7 Ocean Literacy With All (OLWA). The engagement and commitment and excellent work of the IOI Ocean Academy Directors has been the foundation upon which the IOI Ocean Academy Ocean Literacy outreach programme and the endorsement relies. Ocean Decade Actions are initiatives carried out across the globe over the course of the Decade to achieve “the science we need for the ocean we want” - the Ocean Decade Mission. Actions will contribute to fulfilling the 10 Ocean Decade Challenges, which articulate the most immediate priorities for the Ocean Decade. The IOI Ocean Academy addresses principally the Ocean Decade Challenges 9 (Skills, knowledge and technology for all) and 10 (Change humanity’s relationship with the ocean).
The #OceanDecade endorses 16 projects actions to increase ocean resilience and awareness worldwide! 🔹 The Decade Programme Global Ecosystem for Ocean Solutions, led by Ocean Visions will host 10 new Projects to scale up solutions around the ocean-climate nexus. These initiatives focus on the restoration of marine ecosystems and biodiversity, climate remediation, carbon dioxide removal technologies, and digital coastal ecosystems. Based on multidisciplinary collaboration and co-design, these Projects will be implemented in coastal areas, including in Africa and Caribbean Small Island Developing States. 🔹 Under the umbrella of the Ocean Literacy With All Programme, led by UNESCO Ocean, six Projects will accelerate a fundamental shift in the way our ocean is valued, understood, and managed. These initiatives will build an ocean literate society through formal and informal educational and awareness-raising tools, including gameplay and immersive 3D imagery.
