Introducing our new column: HISTORY IN SCALE! Step back in time with our detailed scale model, capturing Sgt. Weaver's dramatic beach landing on September 9th, 1942. After shooting down a Bf109, Weaver's Spitfire BR112/X was severely damaged, forcing him into an emergency belly-landing on the coast of Scoglitti, Sicily. This intense dogfight, where Weaver faced off against Italian pilot Ten. Paolo Damiani of 352 Squadriglia, is now immortalized in our museum's display. Today's History in Picture A Meteor NF 13 of 39 Squadron soaring over Marsa! In March 1957, 39 Squadron had just returned to RAF Luqa from Nicosia due to rising tensions in the Middle East. Two Meteors were initially left behind in case trouble flared up again, but with fresh tensions brewing between Turkey and Syria, the detachment grew to four aircraft. Photo of the Day The EC-121 Warning Star was an advanced version of Lockheed’s famous Constellation, an aircraft that revolutionized commercial aviation and served in both the Army Air Forces, U.S. Air Force, and Navy. This Cold War workhorse was packed with electronics and featured AN/APS-20 air-search and AN/APS-45 height-finding radar. Known as the ‘Willie Victors,’ these aircraft played a critical role in the Distant Early Warning system, detecting long-range Soviet bombers. Some of these U.S. Navy EC-121s were serviced at Hal-Far by Fleet Air Services Squadron Special 201 before their operations moved to Sigonella, Sicily. #AviationHistory #coldwaraviation #aviation #maltaaviation #maltaaviationmuseum #malta #photooftheday
