The EU has enacted a ban on the destruction of unsold clothing, footwear, and textile-based accessories, a major step towards sustainable development. While this regulation is a victory for the environment, it poses significant challenges for fashion companies. The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), effective from July 18, 2024, sets out strict rules on disclosure and bans the destruction of unsold fashion items. Large companies are now required to report annually on the amount of discarded goods, the reasons for discarding them, and the steps they take to prevent waste. From 2026, these companies will be prohibited from destroying unsold items entirely. Medium-sized brands have until July 19, 2030, to start implementing measures to prevent the destruction of these items. Micro and small businesses are exempt from these regulations unless they are found to be helping larger firms bypass the rules. 👕 Take Off is your partner to repurpose excess inventory.
