    Surfing is all about timing, knowing when to catch the right wave. That instinct is what guided me when I decided to start my own real estate agency. At the time, I had just welcomed my second child into the world, and I felt a deep desire to create a company that truly reflected my purpose. It felt like the right moment to take a leap and create something I felt was lacking. How did I know it was the right time to launch my own agency? It was a mix of passion and timing. I really wanted to build something that resonated with my values. While other industries were embracing sustainability and social responsibility, I saw that real estate was lagging behind. I knew I could bring something different to the table. In surfing, you learn to spot good waves by paying close attention to the elements around you, the way sets of waves break in the distance, the changing conditions, the timing. You know when to get ready, and you trust that the right wave is coming. Business opportunities work the same way. By observing the market and noticing where competitors were missing chances (failing to paddle hard enough, so to speak) I knew I had to be alert and ready to take action. Experience plays a huge role in knowing when to make your move. After years of navigating the real estate industry, I had developed an understanding of the market’s tides and shifts. I could see where innovation was needed and where I could add real value to clients and my community. It wasn’t just about timing; it was about trusting my instincts and knowing how to read the landscape. Just like a wave, you can never be completely sure it’s yours until you ride it. But with confidence, endurance, and timing, you might just catch the best wave of your life. And if things don’t go as planned? You paddle back out, stronger than before. I believe that understanding the person behind the business is just as important as understanding the business itself! Starting a business is a lot like learning to surf. I came to surfing later in life, which meant I was far more conscious of the fear of falling than I might have been if I had started younger. That fear made finding balance difficult—it wasn’t something that came naturally. It required consistent effort, focus, and a commitment to showing up even when it felt like I wasn’t making progress. Business is no different. At the beginning, it can feel overwhelming. Imposter syndrome creeps in, and self-doubt becomes a constant companion. There’s always the feeling that others know more, are more qualified, or are simply better at it. But just like on the surfboard, balance doesn’t come from a single, defining moment. It’s built over time through small, incremental improvements. And those improvements only happen with focus—on your values, on your mission, on what truly matters. It’s easy to lose momentum, to question whether it’s all worth it, or to feel stuck. But staying the course, being patient with yourself and with others, and knowing when to step back and when to dive in—that’s where real growth happens. In both surfing and business, there will be falls. There will be moments when it feels like everything is crashing down. But each fall teaches something valuable about balance, about resilience, and about the importance of preparation. Success, I’ve learned, isn’t about avoiding failure; it’s about finding the courage to get back up, reset, and try again. It’s a constant evolution, and I’ve found that inviting others into the conversation about failures and successes helps us all find that balance together.
