Already embodying the band’s penchant for jangly pop (“Old Flame”) and hard-hitting emotional drama (“No Cars Go”), Arcade Fire’s first release pointed clearly to their skyward trajectory right around the corner. The art-rock intuition of “I’m Sleeping in a Submarine” showed a group of rock musicians who were already composing complex and sensuous tracks, while the anthemic guitar and basslines of “Headlights Look Like Diamonds” ached for stadiums to be played in.
