We are wrapping up the SINC 2024 conference. It was a great opportunity to bounce ideas on space exploration and the role of island nations, talk about the importance of astronomy to build a space-focused workforce, protect the close environment of our planet in the time of mega-constellations and of course, show the beautiful sky of the Maldives. The GOAP Secretariat team, Dr Jordan Gacutan and Bella Charlesworth are at SINC to highlight the use of Space and remote sensing data for natural capital accounting. 🤝 Organised by Maldives Space Research Organisation (MSRO), the conference has convened a diverse group of government, university, industry and young professionals leading in space research and innovation. Happening now at the Space for Island Nations Conference, UNIDIR — UN Institute for Disarmament Research and Secure World Foundation's panel on Space Security and Sustainability: Why is it Essential for Small Island Nations? Wonderful line up of speakers incuding: Almudena Azcárate Ortega, Victoria Samson, Aya Iwamoto, Andiswa Mlisa and Brigadier General Mohamed Saleem. Some key takeaways: Small Island Nations are particularly vulnerable to and disproportionately effected by risks associated with climate change. Space enabled technology plays a key role in monitoring those risks and managing emergency response. Earth observation gives unique advantages such as a comprehensive coverage without discrimination of remote and inaccessible areas. Counterspace capabilities are proliferating and an interruption of space data would affect everyone and jeopardize essential services. Space technology and data can help protect detect illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing operations, ensuring sustainable marine activity. Small Island Nations can invest in human capital and take advantage of collaborations with allied States and organizations to increase participation at the multilateral level and develop domestic strategies on space security and sustainability overall.
